Pre-monsoon rains claim 16 lives in Maharashtra
Mumbai, June 10 (IANS): Torrential rains lashed large parts of Maharashtra and Mumbai on Saturday claiming at least 16 lives, even as the monsoon progressed normally over the state and the weather department forecast heavy rain over the next 48 hours. Four people were killed and eight others injured in Gadchiroli, three died in Nanded, two in Latur and one in Nashik when they were struck by lightning in the early hours on Saturday. A 10-year-old boy was washed away when he was on his way to school and was trying to cross a small bridge over a heavily flooded drain in Nevasa, Ahmednagar. Yogesh Kurle, an IT engineer, was electrocuted when he accidentally touched a live wire near Murbad in Thane district, while another person was seriously injured. Early on Saturday, four children aged between four and seven were washed away in Chandrabhaga river near Pandharpur in Solapur district when they had gone for a swim. Their family members and local activists said the children failed to judge the water level on account of illegal sand dredging activities that are carried out in the river.
13 infiltrating terrorists killed on LoC in 96 hours: Army
Jammu, June 10 (IANS): The Indian Army said on Saturday it has killed 13 militants during last 96 hours as it foiled multiple infiltration bids on the line of control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. “Relentless operations mounted by troops have successfully intercepted group s of intruders all along the LoC in Gurez, Machil, Naugam and Uri sectors leading to elimination of 13 intruders during the last 96 hours,” said a statement issued by the Udhampur-headquartered Northern Command, adding that this includes groups of four and three armed intruders who were tracked and eliminated in Machil and Naugam sectors respectively as reported on June 8.
Gangster held after exchange of fire in Punjab
Gurdaspur, June 10 (PTI): A member of the Vicky Gounder gang was today arrested after an exchange of fire here, the police said. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Inspector Kapil Kaushal laid a barricade near Tugal Wal village. Gangster Ravinder Singh alias Giana, along with his three gang members, was coming to Gurdaspur from Berianwala village in a jeep. When the police asked them to stop the vehicle, they opened fire on the team. In a retaliatory fire by the police, Giana sustained bullet injury in his leg, the police said. Although Giana was arrested, the three other gang members managed to escaped, they said. SSP Gurdaspur B S Virk said Giana along with notorious gangster Vicky Gounder had allegedly shot dead three rival gangsters.
8 killed in Odisha road accident
Bhubaneswar, June 10 (IANS): At least eight persons, including a minor, were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between an auto-rickshaw and a truck in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district on Saturday. The collision took place on Jagatsinghpur-Machhagaon road near Chandol Square in Jagatsinghpur district, said police. The driver of the tipper fled the spot after the accident. Meanwhile, the locals staged a road blockade near Chandol demanding adequate compensation for the accident victims.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Rahul Bhatnagar has asked senior officials to ensure that secrecy of government files and records is maintained at all costs. There have been many instances where decisions before being taken are leaked to either the stakeholders or the media, landing the state government in a piquant situation, an official informed. He added that it has also been expected of the officials, mainly departmental heads, to keep an eye on the subordinates to ensure that files are not leaked.
A 23-year-old lady constable, who was allegedly harassed by a colleague, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in a police station here, officials said. The police said they had registered a case against her colleague on the basis of a complaint by her father. The victim’s father, in a complaint alleged that one of her colleagues, identified as Nirbhay Singh, used to harass her.
