Barmer sizzles at 40°C in Rajasthan
Jaipur, April 10 (PTI): Barmer was recorded as the hottest place in Rajasthan on Monday with a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, even as the MeT Department predicted rise in mercury in western parts of the state. Barmer was followed by Jaisalmer which registered its maximum at 39.5 degrees Celsius.
Nitish to launch campaign against dowry, child marriage
Patna, April 10 (PTI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday announced that his government would launch a comprehensive campaign against child marriage and dowry like the one against liquor in his welcome speech at the two-day Rashtriya Vimarsh (national discussion) to mark the beginning of centenary celebration of Champaran Satyagraha of Mahatama Gandhi. He expressed commitment towards ideologies of Mahatama Gandhi and said campaign against social evils like liquor, dowry and child marriage were inspired by the Father of the Nation.
BJYM plans training 15 lakh youths in using BHIM App
Lucknow, April 10 (PTI): Volunteers of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) have decided to train 15 lakh youngsters in using the Bhim App in order to further Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s digital initiative. “The training programme has started on April 8 and will continue till April 14 (the birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar),” he said. “This is the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to increase digital payment and this App will speed up money transaction digitally,” Chaudhry said.
Ex-UP Min R K Arya gets life sentence
Basti (UP), April 10 (PTI): Former Uttar Pradesh minister Ram Karan Arya (former minister in the Akhilesh Yadav government) was on Monday awarded life sentence by a local court in connection with a 23-year-old murder case. District Judge Anil Kumar Pundeer also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him.
Man poisons wife, 2 children, kills self
Jaipur, April 10 (PTI): A man allegedly committed suicide after poisoning his wife and two children in Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan, police said on Monday. His wife died while the children are in hospital. The incident took place on Sunday night and the reason behind their deaths was not known immediately, they said.
Unitech directors granted interim bail
New Delhi, April 10 (IANS): A local court on Monday granted interim bail to real estate company Unitech’s Managing Directors Sanjay Chandra and Ajay Chandra for three months. The Economic Offences Wing had booked the two for allegedly cheating buyers and siphoning off clients’ money. Additional Sessions Judge Raj Kapoor granted three months’ interim bail to the Chandra brothers asking them to furnish a bond of Rs 70 lakh each. There are 90 complaints against the brothers in connection with the project.
Emphasising that Aadhaar is completely “safe, secure and robust”, the government on Monday slammed the opposition for allegedly trying to paint it as a “tragedy” to the country. Replying to a short duration discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Aadhaar – its implementation and implications, Minister for Information Technology and Electronics Ravi Shankar Prasad sought to allay the opposition’s fears that biometric and demographic data collected for Aadhaar could be leaked and misused. He also said that “the world is appreciating it and something which is giving result needs to be respected”.
The Haryana Roadways Employees Union (HRWU) on Monday went on an indefinite strike, accusing the state government of “planning to privatise the public transport sector”. The employees went on strike on Monday evening. Haryana Roadways buses from all 24 depots did not ply on Monday. Gates of the depots were also locked by the striking employees at some places. They also raised slogans against the government.
A Delhi court has refused to show leniency to a 55-year-old man found guilty of sodomising a minor boy and sent him to 10 years in jail. Additional Sessions Judge Gautam Manan held Delhi resident Narender guilty of committing unnatural sex with the 10-year-old child who had gone to the man’s shop to buy milk. The court also awarded a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the child to provide him restorative and compensatory justice.
Resorting to dramatic forms of protest, a group of Tamil Nadu farmers on Monday stripped near South Block here to press for their demands of loan waiver and drought-relief package. The farmers have been protesting at the Jantar Mantar in the national capital since March 14. The farmers from the southern state have been demanding a drought relief package of Rs 40,000 crore, farm loan waiver and setting up of Cauvery Management Board by the Centre.
The police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of mobile phone thieves by arresting two of its members, who after stealing handsets sold those on an e-commerce website. Lucky Jaiswal and Ankit Singh were arrested on Sunday from the KDA Chowk at Chakeri here, ASP Kanpur Gaurav Banswal said. The duo used to roam the city on a motorcycle and snatch expensive mobile phones from pedestrians, the officer said. The police is looking for other members of the gang, he said.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking release of funds over Rs 10,000 crore due to the state under various centrally sponsored schemes. In nearly half an hour meeting, Banerjee, who has long been seeking loan waiver for her state, discussed West Bengal’s debt situation but said that there was no talk on the Teesta river water sharing accord with Bangladesh.
