Paswan undergoes heart surgery at London hospital
New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI): Union food minister Ram Vilas Paswan today underwent a heart surgery at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital with his family saying it was successful and he was recovering. The minister has been operated upon to fix a leaky heart valve by fitting a device. His health condition is good and will be staying in London till June 14, the family member said. Paswan had undergone a heart surgery earlier too. He is on leave till June 14. In his absence, the additional charge of his ministry has been given to Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh.
Civilian killed, 2 injured as India, Pakistan exchange fire along LoC
Jammu, June 1 (IANS): A labourer was killed and two others, including a BSF trooper, were injured on Thursday in firing exchanges between Pakistani and Indian troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, an official said. Indiscriminate firing was started by the Pakistan Army early on Thursday, to which the Indian troops retaliated. The Pakistani forces were firing using small arms, automatics and mortars, he said. “Our forces are effectively retaliating,” Mehta added.
Chennai textile showroom fire continues for second day
Chennai, June 1 (IANS): Fire service personnal on Thursday were still battling to douse the flames that has engulfed a multi-storied textile showroom - Chennai Silks - here, police said. The top four floors caved in on Thursday morning owing to sustained intense heat while thick dark smoke continued to bellow out of the building. Declaring the area unsafe, the police have cordoned off the busy T.Nagar locality which in turn has affected the business of other organisations for a second day. Over 150 fire service personnel have been deployed to douse the fire.
66 Jharkhand schools and colleges see zero results
Ranchi, June 1 (IANS): Jharkhand saw its worst Class 10 and 12th results this year, with not a single student from 66 schools and intermediate colleges of the state clearing the exams. The results of Class 10 and 12th were released by the Education Department head Neera Yadav on May 30. In 33 intermediate colleges, a total of 148 students took the Class 12 examination, while 240 students appeared in the Class 10 examination in the schools, but not a single student has passed. Worried teachers and the National Educational Sangh have raised technical reasons for the poor results.
Non-bailable warrant issued against Goa ex-CM
Panaji, June 1 (IANS): A court on Thursday issued a non-bailable warrant against former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat for failing to appear in a case involving a multi-crore-rupee sewerage scam. Kamat, who headed the Congress-led alliance government during 2007-2012, failed to appear before the North Goa District and Sessions Court on two previous occasions, despite summons being issued to him. Kamat, along with former Chief Minister Churchill Alemao and other government officials, has been accused of allegedly accepting a $976,630 bribe in 2010 from officials of the US-based Louis Berger consultancy firm to secure implementation rights of a multi-billion-dollar water and sewerage project in the state worth Rs 1,031 crore funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) here on Thursday raided at least three places in the national capital to probe an alleged medical scam involving Rs 300 crore, on the complaint of sacked Delhi minister Kapil Mishra. ACB chief M.K. Meena ordered the probe after Mishra complained against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Health Minister Satyendar Jain of abusing their power to benefit pharmaceutical companies. An ACB team also went to the Delhi Secretariat to search for evidence.
A court here on Thursday granted bail to AIADMK leader and party General Secretary V.K. Sasikala’s nephew T.T.V. Dinakaran and his close aide Mallikarjun in the cash for election symbol case. Dinakaran was arrested on April 25 by the Delhi Police Crime Branch on allegations of attempting to bribe Election Commission officials to get the ‘two leaves’ symbol allotted illegally to his faction.
The police has seized 160 cartons of illegal liquor, being smuggled from Haryana in a truck, on Khatima-Panipat Highway in the neighbouring Shamli district. During the inspection, 160 cartons of liquor worth lakhs of rupees were seized. These were being smuggled from Haryana to UP. The alleged smugglers managed to escape from the spot.
Some unidentified men allegedly broke the rear side car window of BJP leader Vijay Jolly and decamped with his laptop, digital camera and a few documents at Saket in south Delhi, police said today. The incident took place yesterday when the leader had left his car and was having ‘golgappas’ (snack) at a nearby street outlet. Police said a case has been registered and they are scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify the culprits.
Armed miscreants today looted Rs 16.80 lakh from a branch of State Bank of India at Baajlachowk in Deoghar district, police said. Six armed miscreants entered the SBI branch at Baajlachowk in the district and took the branch manager and other employees hostage at gun point and looted the money. After looting the money they fled from the branch. On being informed of the incident, DIG (Santal Paragana), Akhilesh Jha and Deoghar Superintendent of Police, A Vijayalaxmi along with police force rushed to the bank for investigation. Confirming the incident, Vijayalaxmi said the miscreants took away the mobile phones of the employees. She said the miscreants entered the bank posing as customers and escaped within 10 minutes after looting the amount.
