Modi, Rahul pay tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru on death anniversary
New Delhi, May 27 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday paid their tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his 53rd death anniversary. “Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary,” Modi tweeted. “Remembering Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. May the vision and the values he dedicated his life to always guide our conscience and our actions,” Gandhi said in a tweet while remembering the first Prime Minister of India who is also his great-grandfather. President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari offered floral tributes at Nehru’s memorial Shantivan.
Mishra claims Rs 300 crore scam in medicine purchase
New Delhi, May 27 (IANS): Sacked Water Minister Kapil Mishra on Saturday accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Health Minister Satyendar Jain of misappropriating health funds and claimed three health scams, including one involving Rs 300 crore. Mishra said three big scams were perpetrated in the health sector by the Aam Aadmi Party government, including one of more than Rs 300 crore in the procurement of medicines. The Kejriwal government improperly procured medicines, overpaid for ambulances, and violated rules in transfers and appointments too, Mishra told the media here. The former Minister said Jain did not allow hospitals to buy medicines and instead handed over the task to a central procurement authority. The former Minister claimed that such medicines have since expired and hospitals have started running out of stock.
Will resign if proved wrong on adulteration by dairies: Balaji
Chennai, May 27 (IANS): Sticking to his charge that private dairies in Tamil Nadu mix chemicals in milk, Tamil Nadu Dairy Development Minister K.T. Rajenthra Balaji on Saturday said he will resign, or even hang himself, if proved wrong. Balaji had accused private dairies of mixing chemicals in milk products to extend the product’s shelf life. Samples drawn from milk produced at private dairies have been sent to a central government laboratory for testing, the Minister told reporters at Sivakasi. However, officials of private dairies, including Hatsun Agro Product, denied Balaji’s accusation.
Maoists award death penalty to Bihar judge at kangaroo court
Patna, May 27 (IANS): Maoist guerrillas at a “Jan Adalat” (kangaroo court) in Bihar on Saturday pronounced the death penalty for a judge, who had awarded the death sentence to their five colleagues on Thursday. The Maoists have also announced a two-day shutdown on May 28 and 29 in Bhagalpur, Munger, Lakhisarai, Jamui and Banka districts to protest against the Munger court order that awarded the death sentence to five Maoists after convicting them for the murder of two CRPF jawans in an ambush during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls in the state. According to the district police officials, nearly 50 armed Maoists had ambushed a vehicle carrying CRPF troopers on the Gangta-Lakshmipur road under the Kharagpur Police Station area, killing two jawans and injuring 10 others, in April 2014.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday announced a slew of incentives for journalists, including a Rs 10,000 monthly pension scheme, for those who are above 60 years and have completed 20 years in the profession. He also announced a life insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh and a cashless mediclaim policy of Rs 500,000. The announcements were made by the Chief Minister at the “Swarna Jayanti Journalists’ Meet” in Panchkula near here. He said now media persons, who have completed five years in the profession, would be given recognition by the state government. He also announced that a new policy would be framed for giving recognition to representatives of online news portals.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed three cases of Zika virus, including a pregnant woman, reported from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, the first in the country. All the cases are from the Bapunagar area of Ahmedabad. However, the WHO did not recommend any travel or trade restriction to India based on the current information available. According to the statement, the routine surveillance detected a laboratory-confirmed case of Zika virus disease through RT-PCR test at B J Medical College in Ahmedabad.
The indigenous Scorpene class submarine has successfully test-fired a torpedo, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said on Saturday, congratulating the scientists and engineers for it. The minister said in a series of tweets that the test was done by the first Scorpene class submarine Kalvari, but did not say which torpedo was tested. The Scorpenes submarines are being built by Mazagaon Dockyard Limited under Project 75 with transfer of technology from the collaborator, DCNS of France. Two of the submarines are ready, and rest four are under construction.
