Rajasthan roasts under heat wave conditions
Jaipur, May 7 (IANS): Heat wave conditions prevailed in the desert state of Rajasthan with Churu being the hottest at 47 degree Celsius, weather officials said on Sunday. The intense heat has forced residents to stay indoors, especially in afternoons. The desert towns of Jaisalmer and Barmer were scorching at 46 degrees, while Bikaner was sizzling at 46.2 and Ganganagar and Kota recorded 45.5 degrees. No respite is expected in the next 24 hours, said weather officials.
23 injured in fire at MP marriage venue
Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh), May 7 (IANS): At least 23 persons, including women and children, were badly burnt as a fire engulfed a marriage venue in this Madhya Pradesh town, police said on Sunday. The late Saturday fire broke out due to a gas leak from a cylinder at the place where food was being prepared, police officer S.N. Pandey told IANS. Four of the victims, who were in a critical state, have been sent to Bhopal for treatment while the rest are being treated in a local hospital, he added.
Delhi girl ‘confined’ in house rescued
New Delhi, May 7 (IANS): Police rescued a 17-year-old girl from a stinking, garbage-filled house where she had been allegedly held captive for over three months by her mother, officials said on Sunday. The girl, however, claimed she had voluntarily confined herself in the house. “We were told the girl was being confined by her mother who visited her once a day to give her food. We found the girl in poor physical condition, locked inside the house full of garbage,” said Joint Commissioner of Police Ravindra Yadav. Neighbours told the police that the mother stayed elsewhere with her elder daughter.
No Karachi-Mumbai PIA flight from tomorrow: official
Lahore, May 7 (PTI): Pakistan International Airlines will suspend its flights between Karachi and Mumbai from tomorrow due to “extremely low” traffic volume on the route, a senior official of the Pakistani national carrier has said. PIA used to operate two flights a week, Monday and Thursday, between the commercial cities of Karachi and Mumbai. The PIA dismissed media reports that the Karachi-Mumbai operation is being suspended due to tense relations between India and Pakistan.
J&K DMs told to stop broadcast of Pakistani TV channels
Srinagar, May 7 (IANS): The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Sunday directed all District Magistrates to ensure stoppage of the broadcast of around 30 Pakistani TV channels. A directive issued by the state Home Department said these channels had the potential of inciting violence and creating a law and order problem. The directive follows a communication from the Union Government asking the state to stop unauthorised broadcast of Pakistani channels. The communication, according to sources, said that it had been reported that the cable operators in the Valley have been transmitting certain TV channels, which are not permitted by the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry. As per Section 11 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, the District Magistrate has the power to seize the equipment in case of a violation.
