Huge amount of black money seized from Maoists, says SIT
Cuttack, June 16 (PTI): A huge amount of black money, generated through illegal trade in narcotics and extortions, has been seized from Maoists, the Supreme Court-appointed SIT on black money said here today. Illegal properties purchased by Maoist leaders have also been seized by various investigating agencies, the SIT’s Vice Chairman Justice (retd) Arijit Pasayat said. “For the first time, it has come to the notice of the SIT that Maoists have amassed a huge amount of black money and their leaders are utilizing that money in making fortunes. It is a new angle,” the retired Supreme Court judge said. The rebels are spending a part of the black money to expand their activities in various parts of the country, Justice (retd) Pasayat said after a meeting with the police and various agencies. He, however, refused to divulge the exact amount of black money recovered from Maoists. The SIT vice-chairman said the black money was generated through illegal trade in narcotics and extortions.
5 youths sodomise teenager, insert iron rod in his rectum
Ghaziabad 16 June (PTI): A 17-year-old student was allegedly sodomised by five youths, who also inserted an iron rod in his rectum, in Modinagar, the police said today. The incident occurred on Thursday when the teenager was returning home after leaving his motorcycle at a repair shop. Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said the five youths “dragged the teenager inside a shop and sodomised him”. When he resisted, they inserted an iron rod in his rectum and filmed the act on mobile phone. They accused also robbed the Class 12 student of Rs 1,600, the SP said. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and the POCSO Act. The victim’s father in a complaint alleged that the accused had been harassing his son for long. They also hurled caste slurs at the boy. He alleged that one of the accused was the son of a police head constable.
Undertrial prisoner found dead under mysterious circumstances at Tihar jail
New Delhi, June 16 (PTI): A 21-year-old undertrial prisoner was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the Tihar Jail, police said today. Police said that they were informed about the incident around 1 pm. He was an accused in a minor’s rape case in outer Delhi’s Ranhola area and was lodged in jail number 5 since 2015, they said. An official from the jail said that the inmate had allegedly banged his head against the wall and killed himself. However, the victim’s lawyer claimed that he was killed by a jail employee. Police said a magisterial inquiry would be conducted in the matter.
Seeking regularisation, SSA teachers hold protest in J-K
Teachers working under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) today held a protest here demanding regularisation of their jobs and release of pending salaries. Observing a ‘black day’, hundreds of teachers assembled at Pratap Park on Residency Road soon after Eid prayers and raised slogans pressing for their demands. The teachers accused the government of trying to mislead them by claiming that pending salaries were released.
Congress’s Amritsar MP G S Aujla has claimed that he had to pull the emergency chain of a train to get its tanks filled after passengers complained to him that they were unable to use toilets due to lack of water. Aujla, along with some senior Railways officials, conducted a surprise inspection of a number of trains, including the Shatabdi Express, at the station here. He claimed he had to pull the emergency chain of the Tata Muri Express to get its water tanks filled as passengers weren’t able to use toilets and wash basins. Aujla said he instructed the train staff to fill the tanks, “but the loco pilot didn’t pay any heed to the operation. So, I pulled the chain to stop it from leaving the platform”. The tanks were filled and the toilets cleaned before the train left the station, he said.
With President Ram Nath Kovind reportedly rejecting Tamil Nadu government’s plea to release seven Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts, the mother of one of them has demanded “mercy killing” of her son. Arputhammal, the mother of A G Perarivalan, recalled the recent assertion by the Tamil Nadu government that it was for the release of the convicts including her son. The seven convicts have been in jail for over 20 years now. Speaking to reporters in Vellore district, Arputhammal said “we are now frustrated” following the prolonged legal battles and the latest development. “We don’t want this life anymore. I am planning to petition the Central and the state governments to kill us. I am going to do that... please do mercy killing of my son,” she said. “My son was taken by police on the pretext of an inquiry (in connection with the case) when he was 19-year-old and now he is 47. His youth and prime (of his life) have been lost,” she said.
Two mentally challenged children, aged 12, were allegedly killed by their maternal uncle, who was arrested today, police said. The accused allegedly brought the twins — a boy and girl — to his rented accomodation here from their home at Miryalguda near Nalgonda in Telangana and strangulated them to death last night, they said. The incident came into light after the owner of the house, where the accused was living, noticed the bodies being shifted into a car, they said. Based on the complaint of the house owner, a case of murder was registered against the man. He and the driver of the car were arrested. Earlier, the accused had told his neighbours that the twins caused pain to his sister and the family faced problems because of them, the police said. Further investigation was on, police added. Meanwhile, child rights NGO ‘Balala Hakkula Sangham’ alleged that the parents of the children were “well aware of the killing” and said they should be made co-accused in the case.
