Abducted kid’s body found in Bihar, one arrested
Patna, Feb. 14 (IANS): A five-year-old boy, who was abducted two days ago, was found dead on Wednesday in a village near Patna, police said, adding that a woman was arrested in the case. Shivam Kumar was abducted from Hulasitola village by a neighbour on Monday when he was playing. The child was later killed. His body was found in a drain outside the village on Wednesday, police said. “It appears that Shivam was strangulated to death as there was a deep injury mark on his neck,” said Rajeev Ranjan Singh, Maner Police Station officer-in-charge. Singh said Poonam Devi was arrested after the victim’s father alleged revenge killing by the neighbour.
Prime accused in Dalit student’s murder arrested
Lucknow, Feb. 14 (IANS): The prime accused in the horrific murder of a Dalit law student in Allahabad was arrested on Wednesday from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, police said. Vijay Shankar was taken into custody from the house of Chandra Bhadra Singh, a political activist. After a scuffle over a trivial issue at an eatery last week, Dileep Saroj was brutally assaulted by four men led by Singh. The 26-year-old LLB student had gone into a coma and later died. The killing had been filmed by a passerby and the clip went viral, leading to outrage. His autopsy showed 30 injuries on his body, including several fractures. Students of Allahabad university went on a rampage after Saroj’s death. The Uttar Pradesh government, after facing much flak, announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of the student.
Former Union minister Bolla Bulliramaiah dies
Amaravati, Feb. 14 (PTI): Former Union minister and veteran TDP leader Bolla Bulliramaiah died of old age-related illness this morning, party sources said. He was 92. Bulliramaiah was ailing since some time. He breathed his last at his residence in his hometown Tanuku in Andhra Pradesh today, the sources said. Bulliramaiah, who was known as a genial person, joined the TDP during its inception and became an MP in 1984. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Eluru constituency in 1991, 1996 and 1999 and served as the Union minister of state for commerce during 1996-98 in the United Front government. Bulliramaiah began his career in 1953 as an employee in the Andhra Sugars and rose through the ranks to become its chairman and managing director.
Police bust medical, engineering seats racket, arrest two
Bengaluru,Feb. 14 (PTI): A gang of fraudsters who allegedly conned many graduates of crores of rupees under the pretext of providing them post graduate seats in prominent medical and engineering colleges in Karnataka,has been busted,police said. Two of their accomplices are absconding They said Rajath Shetty, an engineering graduate and Jaiprakash Singh, a management degree holder, both aged 31, had set up offices in the city under the names of six fictitious firms. The duo convinced medical and engineering graduates that they could offer them seats in prominent collegs and collected huge amount of money from them to the tune of crores of rupees, police said. They were arrested last night based on complaints filed by three graduates. Police said Shetty had earlier worked in a prominent IT company and had cheated many persons in a similar manner by promising them seats at Manipal medical college in Udupi district. Both of them have a number of cheating cases registered against them, police said.
Over a dozen vehicles were torched on Wednesdy by an angry mob over an objectionable religious post on the social media, police said. Hundreds of people assembled on the Ranchi-Jamshedpur highway at Bundu, around 40 Km from here, over the post allegedly against a particular religion. The angry people pelted stones on vehicles, broke their glasses and set on fire at least 13 of them. They also burnt tyres on the national highway, forcing the shopkeepers to down their shutters in panic. Security forces have been deployed to restore peace in the area. They also conducted a flag march. One person, who allegedly posted the objectionable content in the social media, had been arrested, the police said. They, however, refused to elaborate on the posted content. According to the police, situation has been brought under control and prevented from turning into communal clashes.
