Heat wave throws life out of gear in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, April 27 (PTI): Gruelling heat swept across Odisha today throwing life out of gear with Jharsuguda becoming the hottest place at 44.4 degrees Celsius. The number of deaths due to sun-stroke stood at three. The casualties have been reported from Bargarh, Angul and Balangir districts, the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) said. The state virtually turned to a boiling pot as the mercury breached the 43 degree mark in ten towns and 40 degree mark in at least 15 places, with the MeT office forecasting that heat wave will intensify.
UP govt to move HC for cancellation of Prajapati’s bail
Lucknow, April 27 (PTI): The Uttar Pradesh government will move to Allahabad High Court to seek cancellation of bail granted to former minister Gayatri Prajapati by a special court in a rape case, a top law officer said today, indicating fresh trouble for him. Prajapati and two of his alleged accomplices were on Tuesday granted bail by special judge of POCSO court Om Prakash Mishra here in connection with the rape case that had rocked the state some months back during the Samajwadi Party rule. However, his reprieve proved to be shortlived as a local court yesterday remanded him in judicial custody in two separate cases even before he could walk out of jail.
BS Sandhu appointed new DGP of Haryana
Chandigarh, April 27 (PTI): In a major reshuffle, the Haryana government today appointed senior IPS officer B S Sandhu as the Director General of Police. The 1984 batch IPS officer replaced K P Singh, an official spokesman said. IPS officer K Selvaraj has been posted as DGP Railways and OSD Rules, Panchkula. IPS officer Rajwant Pal Singh has been posed as Commandant General, Home Guard and Director Civil Defence, Chandigarh, the spokesman said.
NIT-K students develop warning system at unmanned crossings?
Mangaluru, April 27 (PTI): The students of NIT-K Surathkal here have developed a system that will provide an audio-visual warning about approaching trains (approximately 5 km) well in advance at unmanned railway level crossings and prevent accidents. It would provide an audio-visual warning so that people and vehicles can avoid using the level crossings. Despite some faults during the initial few days, the device was working fine and it had been successfully sending warnings about the passage of the train at the level crossing, the release said.
Veg dishes irk groom, bride finds another man
Muzaffarnagar, April 27 (PTI): They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Sometimes the opposite is also true. Guests at a wedding in Uttar Pradesh saw that first hand when a groom refused to solemnise his marriage after seeing that only vegetarian dishes were being served at the wedding feast yesterday. With the ceremony on the verge of a breakdown, a guest came to the rescue and proposed marriage to the bride-in- waiting who readily accepted, panchayat officials said. The new groom apparently had no objection to the meatless cuisine.
A day after Aam Aadmi Party’s defeat in the Delhi municipal elections, senior leader Sanjay Singh on Thursday resigned as its Punjab in-charge. The co-incharge for Punjab, Durgesh Pathak, also resigned. Both have submitted their resignations to AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal. That AAP’s popularity has slipped after the latest round of the assembly polls, when it failed to perform in Punjab up to its expectations and drew a blank in Goa.
