7,615 Indians lodged in foreign jails: govt
New Delhi, April 6 (PTI): As many as 7,615 Indian nationals are lodged in foreign jails, the Rajya Sabha was told on Thursday. In a written reply, Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh said due to the strict provisions of privacy laws, the US, Canada, Australia and many countries in Europe do not share information about Indian nationals in their prisons. Out of these, 1,810 Indians are lodged in Saudi Arabian jails, and 1,214 are in UAE prisons, he added.
Cong, Left members clash in LS over Kerala police action
New Delhi, April 6 (PTI): Members of the Congress and the Left from Kerala clashed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday over an incident in Thiruvananthapuram where the police had ill-treated the parents of a student who had allegedly committed suicide. The student Jishnu Prannoy had allegedly committed suicide following harassment by college authorities. The police action occurred when Prannoy's parents sought to sit on hunger strike in front of the state police chief's office on Wednesday. Describing the incident as "unfortunate" and "inhuman", Venugopal said the police "brutally attacked" his mother. He also waived a copy of a Malayalam newspaper that had carried pictures of the incident.
Three drown in Bay of Bengal in Kakinada
Amaravati, April 6 (PTI): Three students drowned while two others are feared washed away in the Bay of Bengal near NTR beach at Kakinada town in East Godavari district on Thursday, police said. In all eight students went for a swim at the beach when five of them accidentally got washed away, according to police. Three bodies were fished out later while search is on for rest two.
Tata Housing to build India's biggest gymnastic centre
Mumbai, April 6 (PTI): Tata Housing, one of the largest real estate developers in India and subsidiary of Tata Sons, on Thursday announced plans to build the country's biggest international standard gymnastics centre in neighbouring Thane in partnership with the the Thane Municipal Corporation. "The 1.2 lakh-square foot centre will be developed in a public-private partnership model with the Thane Municipal Corporation at one of the most premium location, Pokhran Road No. 2 in Thane," the company said in a media release.
Hearts, liver airlifted to Delhi from Chandigarh
Chandigarh, April 6 (PTI): Two hearts and a liver, retrieved by the PGIMER from brain dead patients, were airlifted on three different flights from here to their recipients in the national capital today. This is the first time that three organs have been sent on a single day from the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Medical Superintendent and Head of PGIMER's hospital administration Prof Anil K Gupta said. The retrieved kidneys and corneas were used for matching recipients at PGIMER, Gupta said.
