Dimapur, July 24 (EMN): Nagaland witnessed a marginal decreased in weekly Covid-19 cases by recording 640 new infections last week ending July 23, compared to 689 cases reported in the week before, but the week-on-week number of death increased from 12 to 18.
The Health department informed in its Covid-19 weekly bulletin that increase in new cases was reported from Dimapur, Phek, Wokha, Longleng and Peren as compared to the previous week.
“The weekly sample positivity rate has remained at 8% for the last two weeks. Kohima, Longleng and Wokha reported weekly sample positivity rate of more than 10%,” read the update.
It expressed worry over new admissions in Covid-19 hospitals not declining for the last five weeks, especially in Dimapur and Kohima, saying that it could mean more undetected cases circulating in the community.
“Diabetes and hypertension remain the most common associated comorbidities among Covid-19 deaths in the state,” it stated.
The department updated that 69,599 Covid-19 vaccine doses were administered in the past week, taking the total doses administered in the state to 7.29 lakh so far.
It also highlighted the effectiveness of masks and vaccines and the need to follow all the SOPs issued by the government in order to mitigate the spread of the disease.
“While almost all Covid-19 vaccines have shown more than 90% effectiveness against severe disease and death, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown Covid-19 vaccines reduces transmission within the household by 40-60%,” it stated.
The department went on to say that cloth mask can reduce the transmission of the virus by 20-50%; Covid-19 vaccines by 40-60%; triple layer mask by 50-70%; and double mask (triple layer + cloth mask) 85%.
