Nagaland's Wangshem Konyak returns after Gothia and Helsinki Cup triumphs, scoring 13 goals and inspiring young footballers statewide
DIMAPUR — Twelve-year-old Wangshem Konyak, who was part of Minerva Academy FC's U-12 team that won the prestigious Gothia Cup in Sweden and the Helsinki Cup in Finland, received a warm welcome at Dimapur Airport on Thursday.
Konyak, from Tanhai village in Mon district, scored an impressive 13 goals across the two tournaments, emerging as one of Nagaland's most promising young footballers. He was welcomed by members of Konyak Union Dimapur, Konyak Students' Union Dimapur, Konyak Nyupuh Sekho Khong Dimapur, Tanhai Students' Union Dimapur and Tanhai Union Dimapur.
Interacting with media persons after his arrival, Konyak described the tournaments as an unforgettable experience. He identified the Gothia Cup final was the toughest match, with Minerva Academy FC edging Brazil's RS Sports Yellow 2-1 in a closely contested encounter. He also recalled the Helsinki Cup final, where the team defeated defending champions and hosts Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi (HJK) 1-0.

The 12-year-old said that he aspires to represent the Indian national football team and dreams of one day playing for Spanish giants FC Barcelona. He named Lionel Messi as his football idol and biggest inspiration.
Encouraging aspiring footballers, Konyak urged youngsters to remain focused and practise with dedication.
The young striker shared that he began playing football at the age of three. His journey took a significant step forward in 2022 when he was selected during the Khelo India U-14 trials conducted by the Mon District Football Association. The following year, he was spotted by Minerva Academy FC during trials held at Greenwood School in Dimapur.
Reflecting on life at the academy, Konyak said the training schedule is demanding. On non-tournament days, players undergo two training sessions daily, while the workload increases to three or four sessions a day in the lead-up to competitions. Despite the rigorous routine, he said he enjoys the environment and training at the academy.
