DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Zeliang People Organisation (NZPO) has welcomed Nagaland government’s decision to constitute a Reservation Review Commission, calling it a significant step towards addressing disparities in employment opportunities among different tribes of Nagaland.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the organisation acknowledged the foresight of Nagaland’s early leaders, who had recognised imbalances in education and economic status among various tribes and accordingly introduced reservation policies.
These policies, it stated, enabled underprivileged groups to find employment in government sector and work alongside members of more advanced communities.
The NZPO expressed appreciation to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for initiating the commission, which it said should examine all aspects of reservation and evolve an arrangement that ensures fair opportunities for backward and less privileged communities.
Despite decades of reservation in Nagaland, the NZPO pointed out that wide disparities remain between advanced and backward tribes in terms of representation in government service.
Citing data published in local dailies on June 12, 2025, the organisation stated the figures clearly highlighted the continuing imbalance and underscored the need for implementation of reservation in “letter and spirit” to ensure justice.
The NZPO further expressed hope that the Reservation Review Commission would “leave no stone unturned” in identifying ground realities and suggesting remedial measures to narrow the gap between privileged and less privileged groups.
“We can only hope that the government of the day will surely continue to wisely decide such matters of utmost importance and adopt a just policy, especially in the interest of the deserving under privileged classes,” the statement read.
