Expressing solidarity with the women in their fight for gender equality, the general secretary of Dimapur Baptist Women’s Union (DBWU), Khekhuli Assumi, has advised them to ‘only ask for equality and not go beyond biblical teachings.’
Assumi stated this during a programme held on Friday to commemorate International Women’s Day at Town Baptist Church, Dimapur, jointly organised by the women department of Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) and DBWU. Comparing to the past years, she stated that the position of women has gradually improved with passage of time and many women are now leading in various professions. She, however, bemoaned that there are still many women who are deprived of their basic rights.
As the acceptance to the meaning of feminism differ from place to place and difficult to understand sometimes, she advised the women to ‘only ask for equality and not go beyond biblical teachings.’
Admitting on the prevalence of wide gap between the urban and rural areas in terms of education or digital, she expressed that people in rural areas are still lacking behind. By gender equality, she opined that it does not mean the women should do what the men could do but there should be equal rights for both. She, therefore, asked the women to uplift one another for the sake of the future generations.
On the occasion, Assumi opined that technology is a gift from God to make life easier. In this regard, she called upon the women to know how to use them in the right way otherwise it could turn out to be a curse if they misuse the technology.
She has cited instances where many people have become addicted to smartphone and started to practice of things which were unheard of in the past. Stating that such behaviours are not taught by parents but learned through internet, she has termed such practices as against biblical teachings.
In conclusion, she expressed that there is so much of frustration and many are worried about the future of the Nagas as there is no peace in the state. She added that Nagas have become ‘paralysed Christian’ as there are more people who do not want to work but desired only wealth.
