Nagaland veterinarians achieve a milestone by performing the state’s first turtle oesophagotomy at Veterinary Hospital Dimapur, saving an Asian Box Turtle.

DIMAPUR — A juvenile Asian Box Turtle was brought to the Veterinary Hospital, Dimapur, with a fishing hook embedded in the lower section of the oesophagus and stomach.
According to an update, after examination and X-rays, a team led by Dr. Michael Imti Imchen, deputy director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, performed a life-saving surgery, successfully removing the fishing hook after an hour-and-a-half-long operation.

It was informed that this is the first oesophagotomy conducted on a turtle in the state, marking a significant milestone for veterinary medicine in Nagaland. It was noted that the achievement demonstrated that veterinary professionals in the state are capable of handling highly specialised surgical cases.
