Dimapur, April 7 (EMN): Under the aegis of the Nagaland Veteran Football Association (NVFA), the 8th edition of its championship kick started today at Phek town public ground under the theme, “Fitness Surpasses Age”. The championship was hosted by the Phek District Veteran Football Association (PDVFA).
In the first match of the day Wokha downed Dimapur by 3 to 1 goals. Mhombemo scored 1 goal while C. Chinethung Lotha scored 2 goals for Wokha. The lone goal for Dimapur was scored by Limawati.
In the second match, Mokokchung overcame Phek by 4 goals to nil. Ripamayang netted 3 goals for Mokokchung to get the first hat trick of the tournament, while another goal was scored by Capi John.
In the final match, Wokha defeated Kohima by a solitary goal. The lone goal for the Wokha was scored by PT. Mhomtsoe.
Earlier, the inaugural ceremony was graced by Kuzholuzo Nienu, Dy. Chairman, State Planning Board, as the chief guest and unfurled the NVFA flag and declared the championship open. MLA, Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) will grace the closing function as the guest of honour and give away the prizes to the winners and de-hoist the Association flag on April 11 next.
According to a press statement issued by PDVFA Press Secretary, Kuzhovesa Soho, altogether 6 teams turned up for the championship out of 11 districts. The participating teams are, Dimapur, Wokha, Kohima, (Group-A) Dimapur, Phek and Tuensang (Group-B).
Mention may be made that Day 2 matches would be played at the recently inaugurated Tizu Area Sports Complex, Khuza some 20 KMs away from Phek Town. The day long matches shifted to Tizu Area Sports Complex, Khuza is aimed to facilitate the participating teams to have part of outing moment as well.
