Kohima, June 8 (EMN): The fourth All Nagaland Open Veteran and Sub-veteran Badminton Tournament got underway on Fri. June 8 at the Indoor Badminton Stadium, Kohima, under the theme ‘Health is Wealth’.
International badminton referee H Gyaneshor Singh graced the inaugural function of the two-day championships and officially declared the tournament open.
78 players from different districts will be playing under 38 teams in five events categories: 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+ and 55+. The biennial tournament is being organised by Kohima-based club, Capital Shuttlers.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, the club’s vice president Jopi shared a brief background of the tournament. He said games and sports are essential for overall growth of the body and mind, and added that it was encouraging to see growing enthusiasm for the game in the recent years. He also said that veterans have passed their prime but was here to exhibit their skills as well as to promote fitness through their love for the game.
According to the organisers, two state players will not be allowed to team up to play in the tournament in order to maintain neutrality and to give chance to non-state players to have a shot for the titles in a true competitive spirit.
Till Friday evening, the quarter finals matches have been completed and the second day will begin with the semi finals. The closing function of the tournament is scheduled to be held at 4 pm on Sat. June 9.
