DIMAPUR — The Department of English, Nagaland University (NU), organised a one-day regional seminar titled ‘Angami folk tradition: myriad aspects,’ on October 3.
According to an update, the inaugural session featured Dr. Rosemary Dzuvichu, who recently retired from the department, as the chief guest.
Prof. N Das, head of the English department, outlined the seminar's objectives, emphasising the importance of exploring and understanding the Angami folk tradition.
In her address, Dzuvichu highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Angami Nagas and encouraged participants to engage in comparative studies of Naga folklore and global folk traditions.
She also highlighted the pressing need for a dedicated folklore department at Nagaland University to promote research in this vital area.
Discussions during the seminar covered various facets of Angami folk traditions and similar folk traditions in the Philippines, Angami festivals and the symbolic role of animals, particularly the tiger.
The technical session was led by Dr. R Vasanthan, with several scholars in the department actively researching the folk traditions of different Naga tribes.
“This reflects the department's commitment to organising regional seminars focused on diverse folk traditions in the future,” it stated.
The seminar concluded with the presentation of certificates to paper presenters and participants, marking a successful gathering dedicated to the exploration of Angami cultural heritage.
The event brought together thirty research scholars and faculty members from various departments.
