Nagaland University hosts a seven-day training on scientific beekeeping to promote sustainable livelihoods and income generation for farmers.

DIMAPUR — A seven-day training programme on scientific beekeeping commenced at the School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University (SAS, NU), Medziphema campus, on Thursday. The training will continue until January 20.
According to an update, the programme is being conducted in farmers’ fields and project sites under the project “Quality Nucleus Stock Development, Training and Demonstration among Farmers and Project Sites”, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare through the National Bee Board (NBB) under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM).
The programme is organised by SAS, NU as the implementing agency. The training is being conducted under the leadership of Dr. Mary N Odyuo, associate professor and principal investigator (PI), and Dr. Avinash Chauhan, scientist at AICRP Honey Bee and Pollinators and co-principal investigator (Co-PI), who are also serving as the course directors.
Addressing the participants at the inaugural programme, Pro-Vice Chancellor of NU Medziphema Campus, Prof. Dipak Sinha, highlighted the importance of beekeeping in promoting sustainable livelihoods, emphasising its role in income generation, crop pollination, and environmental sustainability. He encouraged farmers to adopt scientific beekeeping practices to enhance income and livelihood security.
Deputy Registrar of SAS, NU, Dr. Anthony Richa urged the participants to actively and sincerely engage in the training programme to derive maximum benefit. He noted that genuine participation would motivate facilitators to extend continued technical guidance and support to farmers in the future.
The training programme includes theoretical sessions and hands-on practical demonstrations on bee biology, bee flora, seasonal management, disease and pest management, value addition, pollination services, and bee products.
