Dimapur, July 9 (EMN): To invigorate the government of India to accelerate the negotiation process for an early solution of the Indo-Naga political issue, the Nagaland unit of the Janata Dal (United) carried out a ‘dharna’ on Monday at the Parliament Street in New Delhi.
During a telephonic conversation with
Eastern Mirror, the president of the state’s JD (U), Senchumo Lotha, expressed satisfaction saying that the response to the dharna was ‘beyond expectation.’ “Not only people from Nagaland but many national leaders also attended including the national executive members,” Lotha asserted. He mentioned that important leaders from the JD (U) party also made it to the sit-in.
The JD (U) announced the decision to undertake a sit-in, during a press conference that was conducted in Kohima on July 3. The unit took to the sit-in on Mon. July 9 in New Delhi.
Queried about the possibility of the party submitting representations to the prime minister as was stated during the press conference on July 3, Lotha said that they were going to submit a representation through the Home minister. He mentioned that they would submit it probably by July 10 as the Union Home minister was out of the capital, and scheduled to return on July 10.
Lotha had mentioned on July 3 that the Naga solution was part of the party’s election manifesto earlier during the state elections. ‘We sincerely feel that we must carry on with our desire for early solution for which we want to be more pragmatic.’
In line with the party’s manifesto, the group initiated a dharna which, according to the party, was done to ‘exigently demand’ for a solution within the ‘earliest time possible.’
The president sounded elated at the response given by leaders of the country and was resolute that the sit-in was a success.
Senchumo Lotha had earlier expressed faith in the parties that are involved in the talks, saying that the party was confident that they were capable of striking an honourable and acceptable solution for the Naga society. “With this trust on the negotiating parties, we are there to press upon them to strike an early solution as soon as possible because to delay is to create more problems and more advantage for our adversaries,” he said.
