KOHIMA — Towards the state's effort in fighting against the menace of drugs, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has pledged to make the state drug-free on the occasion of the 77th Indian Independence Day celebration.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio administered the pledge to the crowd gathered during the Independence Day celebration in the state capital.
Rio said the pledge for drug-free Nagaland marks the state's commitment towards the war on drugs. The pledge was also simultaneously taken in all the districts and sub-divisions.
On several occasions, Rio had raised concerns over the increase in the number of drug traffickers, peddlers and users in the state, and expressed apprehension that the drug menace might "jeopardise'' the present and future generations, if not tackled now.

"We consider drug abuse and its peddling a serious menace to the society in the State. And therefore, we have resolved to give a further impetus to our War on Drugs," he said in his address.
He also informed the state government is taking measures to ensure strict enforcement of the preventive measures jointly by the major stakeholders like the churches, village councils and the departments concerned, to eradicate the drug menace from society.
