Commemorating ‘World Wildlife Day,’ Environmental Information Awareness Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) under the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB), in collaboration with the department of Forest and Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP), organised a programme and visit to NZP with the members of Rintaniemei Neighbourhood Children’s Home and JN Aier College on Friday on the theme “Partnerships for wildlife conservation.”
An update from the NPCB stated that the programme was held in the conference hall of the NZP director’s office. It began with a powerpoint presentation on wildlife by range forest officer, Watisungla Amer, wherein she stressed on the importance of wildlife in creating stability to the environment, their importance in food chains, and the threats faced by the wildlife.
In order to protect the wildlife in nature, she advised not to destroy their habitat, save the water bodies and do volunteer work. She added that one could resort to eco-friendly products by using jute bags instead of plastic bags, planting more trees, managing waste and keeping the surroundings clean.
She also shared on the 5R of solid waste management- refuse, reduce, reuse, repair and recycle.
I Limatemjen, principal of JN Aier College, also spoke on the importance of wildlife and shared how hunting habit has impact the environment. He also stressed on the importance of management of garbage or waste.
A short speech on the significance of World Wildlife Day and their importance on economic, agricultural, ecological, and social aspect was shared by Khriehunuo Rutsa, EIACP programme officer.
A short quiz competition was conducted by Vinoto K Rochill, Forester-I of NZP, where the winners were given prizes. A short video on NZP was also shown to the participants showcasing the importance of wildlife from the perspective of Nagaland Zoological Park and Nagaland in general.
It stated that participants from JN Aier College, Diphupar, contributed vegetable feedstuffs for the zoo animals. They also organized a plogging drive inside the zoo premises where trash and litters were picked and disposed off in waste bins provided inside the zoo.
Meanwhile, the zoo director Dr. C Zupeni Tsanglai has thanked the students for their voluntary work inside the zoo to mark the celebration.
It stated that a total of 28 children and two guardians from Rintaniemei Neighbourhood Children’s Home and 30 final year students with two lecturers in charge of JN Aier College along with seven staff from Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) attended the programme.
The programme concluded with a visit to the Nagaland Zoological Park. Dimapur, March 3 (EMN)
