Nagaland State Legal Services Authority Member Secretary Neiko Akami visits Mon District Jail, highlighting legal aid and the Victim Compensation Scheme.

DIMAPUR — The Member Secretary of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), Neiko Akami, accompanied by the Mon District Legal Services Authority (Mon DLSA), paid an official visit to Mon District Jail on February 27.
According to a DIPR report, the team included the District and Sessions Judge, Mon; the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mon; the panel lawyer, DLSA; assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel (LADC); and jail Para Legal Volunteer (PLV).
During the visit, the member secretary addressed and interacted with the inmates. In his address, he highlighted the importance of legal aid and informed the inmates that free legal services are provided through the LADC system to represent and pursue their cases free of cost.
He further apprised the inmates that Lok Adalat is organised quarterly to facilitate amicable settlement of cases, including compoundable offences, to ensure timely access to justice.

Speaking on various services provided under the legal aid scheme, the member secretary highlighted the Victim Compensation Scheme and cited instances where compensation was successfully awarded to victims through the Legal Services Authorities. He mentioned instances wherein the victims' families received compensation with the assistance of the NSLSA.
He further highlighted that Mon DLSA had awarded monetary compensation amounting to INR 6,00,000 to three families in the year 2025 under the relevant Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012. He further appreciated the Under Trial Review Committee (UTRC) for taking timely steps and recommending three undertrial inmates to be released and further effectively releasing them.
The member secretary also appreciated the Mon DLSA and LADC for their effective work and further encouraged them to continue the good work to ensure the access and delivery of justice to all.
He encouraged the inmates to utilise their time in custody for self-reflection and reformation, stressing the reformative approach and the need to have confidence in the justice delivery system.
Lastly, after addressing and interacting with the inmates, he proceeded to inspect the jail premises, wherein he recommended the installation of a European toilet in the female ward to improve basic facilities and sanitation within the jail premises.
This visit reaffirmed the commitment of the LSAs to ensure access to justice, legal awareness, and welfare measures for inmates and victims alike.
