KOHIMA — In Nagaland, only one claim has been paid under the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022 since its implementation on April 1, 2022, up to February 28, 2026, according to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The data shows that 29 hit-and-run accident cases were reported in 2020, 38 in 2021, 24 in 2022, 34 in 2023, and five cases (provisional) in 2024.
However, only three claims have been registered under the scheme so far, of which just one has been settled as of February 28, 2026.
Year-wise data indicates that no claims were registered or paid in 2022–23; two claims were registered but none paid in 2023–24; one claim was both registered and paid in 2024–25; and no claims were registered or paid in 2025–26 (up to February 28, 2026).
The ministry stated that the scheme, notified on February 25, 2022, provides compensation in cases of death or grievous injury resulting from hit-and-run accidents.

Under the scheme, a fixed compensation of INR 2 lakh is awarded in case of death and INR 50,000 in case of grievous injury.
As per the procedure, applicants must submit claims with the required documents to the claims enquiry officer of the sub-division or taluka where the accident occurred.
The officer is required to process the claim within one month, after which the claims settlement officer has 15 days to sanction it and forward the order to the General Insurance Council, which then disburses the payment within 15 days.
The ministry further informed that the scheme was amended on March 2, 2026, to streamline and strengthen its implementation.
Under the amended provisions, District Road Safety Committees and State Road Safety Councils have been empowered to review implementation and take corrective measures.
It added that directives have been issued to address delays in claim settlements, urging stricter compliance with procedures and greater involvement of insurance officials at the district level to reduce pendency.
