Nagaland recorded India's second-lowest road fatalities in 2025, with 29 deaths, reflecting a sharp decline in accidents and fatalities
KOHIMA — Nagaland recorded the second-lowest number of road fatalities in the country in 2025, with 29 deaths, according to data released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Only the Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported fewer fatalities, with 25 deaths.
The data also shows a sharp decline in both road accidents and fatalities in Nagaland over the past four years. Road accidents dropped from 489 in 2022 to 88 in 2025, while fatalities declined from 73 to 29 during the same period.
According to the ministry's data, Nagaland recorded 489 road accidents and 73 fatalities in 2022, 303 accidents and 86 fatalities in 2023, 129 accidents and 62 fatalities in 2024, and 88 accidents and 29 fatalities in 2025.
The ministry stated that the figures are based on data received from states and union territories. It noted that road accidents are a multi-causal phenomenon resulting from a combination of factors, including human error, road and environmental conditions, and the condition of vehicles.
Among the north-eastern states, Mizoram recorded the fewest road accidents (71), while Nagaland reported the lowest number of road fatalities (29) in 2025.
The ministry's data shows that Arunachal Pradesh recorded 103 road accidents and 83 fatalities, Assam reported 16,026 accidents and 3,907 fatalities, Manipur recorded 345 accidents and 103 fatalities, Meghalaya 223 accidents and 149 fatalities, Mizoram 71 accidents and 51 fatalities, Sikkim 141 accidents and 72 fatalities, and Tripura 477 accidents and 224 fatalities during the year.
Nationally, Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of road accidents with 71,387 cases, resulting in 18,505 fatalities, while Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of road deaths at 27,550, from 49,671 road accidents.
To reduce road accidents and fatalities, the ministry said the government of India is implementing a multi-pronged road safety strategy based on the 4Es—Education, Engineering (of roads and vehicles), Enforcement, and Emergency Care—along with several other road safety initiatives aimed at improving road user safety.
