Dimapur, May 8 (EMN): Nagaland continues to witness steep rise in the number of Covid-19 cases, recording 1,604 new infections and 18 deaths in the past week ending May 7, which is the highest new cases and fatalities registered in a single week till date.
This numbers don’t include cases and deaths reported only Saturday.
According to the weekly bulletin issued by the department of Health and Family Welfare, 1194 positive cases detected in the past week were traced contacts/self-test, which is 74%, while travellers/ returnees account for 16% (256), and frontline workers 1% (12).
Out of the positive traced contacts, household contacts account for 26%, students and self-employed 20% each, and government employees 19%.
The department stated that Diabetes and hypertension are the most commonly associated comorbidities among the deaths in the state, because of which vaccination of high risk was prioritised.
Surprisingly, persons in 30-44 years age group account for 29% of the total deaths in the state, which is the highest, and 5% of fatalities is from those aged between 15-29 years.
The Health department updated that random sampling test in Kohima showed high positivity rate of 61% with the results of 128 persons out of 210 tested returning positive for the virus.
During the random tests, samples of 122 taxi drivers were taken, out of which 58 results returned positive at 48% positivity rate, while 70 out of 88 shopkeepers tested were Covid-positive, which is 80% positivity rate.
It added that 4,781 samples were tested across the state in the past week with a positivity rate of 34% and the exercise is still underway.
One super spreader event reported from a religious event in Mon during the past week, updated the Health department.
“A Church revival camp held between 21-25 April 2021 turned into a super spreader event in Mon district as 45 persons have tested positive out of 69 samples with a positivity rate of 65%,” it stated.
“Testing and contact tracing is still underway. The district administration has directed all attendees to self-isolate and turn up for testing. Social and religious events are high risk factors for such super-spreading events,” it added.
