KOHIMA — Nagaland state has a total of 495 prison inmates across the district jails and Central Jail Dimapur as of February 19, 2026, according to the National Prisons Information Portal (NPIP).
As per the data, of the total inmates, 479 are male and 16 are female (two females each in Kohima and Mokokchung district jails, one in Tuensang and 11 in Dimapur district jail).
Data shows that there are 186 inmates in Central Jail Dimapur, 15 in District Jail Longleng, 44 in District Jail Kohima, 39 in District Jail Mokokchung, 18 in District Jail Tuensang, 65 in District Jail Dimapur, six in District Jail Kiphire, 45 in District Jail Mon, 16 in District Jail Peren, 22 in District Jail Phek, 26 in Wokha District Jail, and 13 in Zunheboto District Jail.

Out of 495 inmates, the record shows that 27 inmates are below 20 years of age, 180 inmates are between 20-30 years of age, five inmates are above 70 years of age and the others are aged between 30-60 years of age.
The portal indicates that there is no record of escaped prisoners in the state.
In the country, the data shows that there are 5,16,910 prison inmates, and the top seven states with the highest prison population as on February 19 are Uttar Pradesh (83,408), Bihar (49,687), Madhya Pradesh (42,256), Maharashtra (38,227), Punjab (35,571), Haryana (26,666) and Rajasthan (24,428).
