Nagaland observes World Tourism Day

Principal Correspondent KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 27 NAGALAND today joined in observation of the 35th World Tourism Day under the theme “Tourism and Community Development” at Heritage Bamboo Hall, Kisama, Kohima. The celebration was organized by Tourism department in collaboration with Nagaland Tourism Association (NTA) and Nagaland Hotels & Restaurants Association (NHRA). Addressing the gathering, Commissioner & Secretary Himato Zhimo emphasized on according importance to tourism development in the State. Observing that nothing is made in Nagaland, he said tourism and be truly made in Nagaland with the multipronged approach. Noting that Nagaland is blessed with immense natural beauty, he called upon the Tourism department to take the lead in preservation and conversation of the environment. Lamenting that the hotels and restaurants are mostly employing illegal Bangladeshi migrants, he appealed that local youth should be employed so that the authentic Naga touch can be felt by tourists. He opined that the department should make Kisama - the annual tourism promotional destination Hornbill Festival of the State - as plastic-free zone. He said initiatives should be taken up not to use any form of plastic during the annual festival held in December. He also called upon villages, hotels and restaurants to maintain cleanliness by segregating the wastes. Tourism Director Purakhu Angami said tourism industry can help in gainful employment of the educated youngsters. He therefore called upon all stakeholders to come together to ensure sustainable assets and resources for promotion of tourism industry in the State. He also called upon the Southern Angami people to take care of the Naga Heritage Village and also cooperate with the State government in curbing anti-social activities within the vicinity. Meanwhile, Seyiekhrielie Natso from Nagaland Hotels and Restaurants Association (NHRA) suggested on formation of Tourism Council, inclusive of all stakeholders, and spearheading the Tourism department to have better coordination and also to work together to promote tourism sector in the State. Nagaland Tourism Association president Vincent Belho also spoke on streamlining the charges for tourists while also calling upon all to play proactive role to benefit from tourism industry.
