KOHIMA, JUNE 4: Governor PB Acharya has appealed to all to observe World Environment Day by giving some time to participate in the cleanliness drive around the vicinity of homes, offices, surroundings, schools, colleges so as to make Nagaland a cleaner State thus facilitating National Mission of Swacch Bharat.
The Governor in his message on the World Environment Day said, “Let us all put a concerted effort for the future of our children and grand-children by making our planet a safer, cleaner and beautiful place to live in.”
Expressing happiness that Nagaland Pollution Control Board is organizing a cleanliness drive in the State to mark the occasion, Acharya said, “The World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June, every year to know the vital importance about environmental issues and make sure that people around the world enjoy healthy environment and protect the earth natural resources from further deterioration.”
Commemorating the World Environment Day, DPDB Kohima has organized a cleanliness and tree plantation drive on the theme ‘Go wild for life’ in collaboration with the Phezoucha Krotho members at the State Assembly, New Secretariat this morning.
Kicking off the tree plantation drive, Er Vikho-o Yhoshü encouraged the staff members and the community to take care of the planted trees.
Emphasizing on the importance of tree plantation for a balance eco-system, Rovilatuo Mor, Deputy Commissioner, Kohima said clearance of weeds around the sapling and trees should be done, and also filling the gap by planting new saplings.
The programme saw the active participation of DPDB members, officers and staff of Education Department and members of Phezoucha Krotho. The brief programme was chaired by Rovilatuo Mor, DC Kohima while Lithrongla Tongpi, ADC pronounced the vote of thanks. Around 150 cryptomeria japonica trees were planted in and around New Secretariat, Kohima, which was sponsored by the Forest Department.
Meanwhile, Kohima Village Youth Organisation (KVYO) also undertook a plantation drive in the capital, participated
by all youth members of KVYO, and other dignitaries including Khriehu Liezietsu, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth Resources and Sports, Music Task Force, State Lotteries, chairman DPDB, Kohima and Medoselhou Keretsü, chairman, Kohima Village Council, among others.
The plantation programme commenced with Medoselhou invoking God’s blessings. The first two saplings were planted by the Parliamentary Secretary and the Village Council chairman at the Nagaland Secretariat premises, near Phizo’s Hill.
In a short programme held, KVYO president Medozhatuo Rutsa said the plantation drive is initiated with the aim to contribute towards the well being of our mother earth. “With this day, let us all plant a tree,” he appealed adding that the plantation programme was organized on Saturday since June 5 falls on a Sunday. On the day, over 3,000 saplings were planted in and around the State capital, it was informed.
Nagaland University Teachers ‘Association (NUTAK) and the Nagaland University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NUNTSA), Kohima Campus, Meriema on Friday undertook a massive tree plantation drive at the university campus in commemoration of “World Environment Day 2016”.
Marking the occasion, Prof. Pardeshi Lal, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema addressed the faculty members and staffs of the university.
In his address, Prof. Lal maintained that the importance of environment attracted the concern of the Global Communities since 5th June, 1972 when the UN General Assembly organised a conference on human environment the outcome of which paved the way to celebrate World Environment Day on 5th June, 1974 onwards.
This occasion run under the UN environment program marks the day for global concern to generate mass awareness for protecting their environment to keep planet earth green and fit for comfortable living both for the present and for future generation. Prof. Lal also said that every year a country hosts the World Environment Day under some theme or slogan, and academicians, scientists and social scientists and volunteers from across the country gather to celebrate.
“India hosted WED in 2011 under the slogan “Forest, Nature at your service” and committed to curb its carbon-dioxide emission up to 30% by 2040. This year, the occasion is being hosted by Mongolia under the theme “Think, Eat, Save”, he added. About 400 trees were planted around the University campus by both Associations to celebrate the occasion.
Mass social work was organized at Medziphema sub-division on June 4 to observe World Environment Day on June 5. District administration, all departmental staff, educational institutions, local bodies and residents of Medziphema participated with full enthusiasm.
Commemorating the day, mass social work was conducted throughout Dimapur district. All government departments under Dimapur district undertook massive cleaning in their respective offices beautifying the compounds, clearing drainages, interior cleaning etc thereby giving a facelift to the district. Shop owners and members from various colonies were also seen cleaning the areas under occupation.
As per the government direction, World Environment day was observed at Changtongya Sub-division on 4th June 2016 by conducting a mass social work and planting trees during which people from all walks of life participated by cleaning their respective wards, colonies and government offices. A mass cleanliness drive was carried out at Akuluto town whereby all the departments and the denizens of the town actively participated in cleaning the town and all the drainages. The work was supervised by SDO(C), Kikumsangla and the town GBs. Meanwhile, the departments and the people of Akuluto town expressed profound gratitude to Parliamentary Secretary, IPR, Khekaho Assumi who contributed Rs.50,000 for the cleanliness drive.
Satakha town had a mass social work-cum-plantation drive. During a short program at local ground, EAC, Nockpai Konyak, imparted environmental issues, its consequences and effects to the students and the government employees after which social work and plantation drive were carried out. Eco Club, Satakha, also contributed Rs 2,500 each to every school under Satakha town for environment related activities. The cleanliness drive cum plantation drive was jointly organized by administration and forest department.
Zunheboto town carried out a mass cleanliness drive from 6 a.m. onwards in all the 11 colonies/sectors. Citizens from all colonies actively took part in cleaning the roads, drainages and their surroundings. The work was supervised by town GBs in their respective wards.
The Department of Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Kohima in commemoration with World Environment Day joined hands with the rest of the world in taking forward the United Nations’ biggest day for positive environmental action by organising a clean-up day and plantation drive in the Directorate complex. The programme was led by Parliamentary Secretary for Labour & Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship & Border Affairs Mhonlumo Kikon and Additional Director Y. Vandanshan Lotha along with all the officers and staff from the Directorate, Regional Employment Exchange, Kohima & Govt. Industrial Training Institute, Kohima.
A mass social work was held in Mon headquarters from 8 a.m. It was organised by the district administration under the Mission ‘I Love My Mon Town’. The administrative head led by DC Mon, W. Honje Konyak and his other officers actively participated in the social work. Various govt. departments led by HoDs and staff wholly participated by mowing and cleaning up their respective office compound. The tree plantation drive was carried out in and around Mon town under Forest Department along with the Administration and Officers’ club. All the educational institutions, churches, the concerned DBs, ward GBs & presidents and the general public of Mon took active participation by cleaning their own institutions, church surroundings, their wards, homes and surroundings. Others like NGOs, 33AR, DEF Mon and Local business community took part in the mass cleanliness Drive. Also MTC, PWD(R&B), DEF, PHED, GREF, VG and Pumin provided one vehicle each for collection and disposal of garbage and waste debris. Thus, it was a grand success with positive response and active participation from all the NGOs, govt. departments, educational institutions, churches, wards and the general public.
A mass social work was held at Phek Town where from all walks of people including the government employees and the students took part in cleaning their respect surroundings and colonies of Phek town.
Mangkolemba town also observed the World Environment Day on with the theme “Join the Race to make the World a Better Place”. To mark the day, a mass social work and tree plantation was conducted in and around the town and office premises in the entire administrative circle under the sub-division. More than 5000 saplings of various trees and seeds were distributed in the sub-division to plant on the day. All sections of people participated during the social work as the day also marked an activity for the yearlong celebration of 25 years of ADC Hq establishment in Mangkolemba. The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Forest and Soil which was supported by UNDP (GEF).
A district level mass social work was conducted in the whole of Peren district towns and villages to clean up blocked drainage, clear roadsides and office premises. There was a huge response from the town dwellers down to the villages and respective wards and colonies, offices and NGOs.
S. Tainiu, ADC Peren who led the cleanliness drive in the district lauded the active participation of all concerned for the success of the mass social work. She also led the social work in Peren town. Head of offices, colonies, Peren Town Women Welfare Organisation, (PTWWO) Peren Town Youth Organisation, (PTYO) participated in the mass social work. At Tening, Tsuvishe Phoji, ADC along with the respective ward chairmen, head of offices led the social work to clean up the town areas, office premises and drains etc. In Jalukie, the administration led by Rhosietho Nguori SDO(C) in collaboration with the Legal Services Authority, Peren and the Forest department conducted the mass social work and also planted tree saplings in and around the town areas with school children. All the nine colonies and NGOs actively participated in the social work.
Mass social work was also conducted at Athibung under the guidance of Lithrila, EAC. All the 5 colonies and head of offices with their staff participated in the social work.
The mass social work began at 6: am till 10:am.Shops and business establishments remain closed during the social work in all the towns and administrative head quarters.
Tuensang celebrated the World Environment Day-cum-Swatch Bharat Mission cleanliness drive at Clock Tower Tuensang. The celebration was attended by district head offices, central security forces, GBs and all the ward representatives.
Dr. Manazir J Samoom IAS SDO (C) Tuensang who was the chairman gave an introduction as to why World Environment Day is celebrated. Keynote address was delivered by Dr. Sentitula, IFS DFO Tuensang where she enlightened and deliberated the safety measures of the environment to the gathering.
While the formal programme was concluded with the declaration of the world environment day 2016 by DC Tuensang, Alem Jongshi who also started giving away the tree saplings to the office establishments and the ward representatives of the district. He also gave away the prize to the winners of the painting competition on green environment conducted by the district legal service authority. The cleanliness drive and the plantation in the office establishments was supervised and inspected by additional deputy commissioner and administrator town council committee, Nchumbemo Odyuo,
World Environment Day was observed in Kiphire with a cleanness drive. All eleven wards participated in the social work along with offices cleaning the respective premises.
A mass social work was held in Mokokchung town from 6 to 8 a.m. All the 18 wards in Mokokchung town, educational institutions and all the departments participated in the social work by cleaning the surrounding, drainage, footpath etc.
The department of forest has been distributing tree saplings since April to individuals, schools, colony youth,
different departments, institutions, churches, armed forces and students’ unions in the district. It was reported that till June 4, the forest department has distributed more than 16000 saplings in Mokokchung and would continue to do next month.
