DIMAPUR — Expressing concern over the possible influx of illegal immigrants as a result of the recent eviction drive carried out by Assam government, the Nagaland unit of National People’s Party (NPP) has called for immediate and coordinated response from the government of Nagaland.
In a representation submitted to the state home minister, the NPP stated that the situation poses a grave threat to the state’s demographic balance and cultural identity.
It pointed out that the porous and vulnerable entry points along the Nagaland-Assam border, particularly in border towns and districts, could be exploited if effective preventive measures are not in place.
The party warned of inadequate verification and surveillance mechanisms and stressed the potential for demographic imbalance if the situation is left unchecked.
Recommendations
Accordingly, the NPP recommended the deployment of dedicated patrol units with round-the-clock surveillance at critical routes and border points to curb illegal entry.

Additionally, it proposed the establishment of watchtowers and checkpoints in coordination with Assam Police and central security forces to enhance monitoring along the interstate border.
To control the influx of illegal immigrants, the party called for mandatory biometric registration and verification of all migrant workers entering Nagaland. Regular inspection drives should also be conducted in urban colonies and villages, it stated.
The party stressed the importance of encouraging community vigilance by actively involving village councils, colony authorities, and local committees.
It also urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious movement in their localities.
As part of its administrative proposals, the NPP suggested the formation of a Special Task Force (STF) under Home department to coordinate anti-infiltration operations.
It further recommended strengthening and digitising the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system for better monitoring and tracking. To deter illegal employment or harbouring of immigrants, the party called for strict penalties on individuals and organisations found violating these norms.

Also, the party underscored the need for technological tools in border management. It suggested deploying drones and real-time monitoring systems along border belts. Moreover, it recommended the creation of a state-level digital database to track and verify migrant entries accurately and efficiently.
In light of the rising concern, the NPP appealed to the state government to convene an urgent review meeting with law enforcement agencies and border district officials. It also urged the issuance of directives to all districts to intensify verification at every entry point.
