Dimapur, May 6 (EMN): Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) has notified all the head of registered educational institutions to disseminate proper awareness on plastic waste management with regard to ban of single-use plastics (SUPs) with a view to eradicate the menace of plastics and other serious environmental and ecological challenges posed by rampant use such items.
The notification was issued in pursuance to the government order dated March 11 on imposing “Ban on single-use plastics in Nagaland,” stated a DIPR report.
It stated that single-use plastic, also known as disposable plastic items, are non-biodegradable and therefore contaminate the environment. The single-use plastics include plastic bags, plastic water bottles, soda bottles, straws, plastic plates, plastic cups, plastic spoons, food packaging containers, plastic shopping bags etc. It added that single-use plastics mostly end up in landfill sites, which is a growing concern as it might take years to decompose and potentially leak pollutants into the soil and water.
It stated that when plastic wastes are not properly disposed of, they get carried away by wind as litter or washed away by rain or travel via storm drains into rivers and streams, which pose a threat to the environment and human health.
In this regard, all institutions have been directed to inform and educate the students about the drastic impacts of disposal of wastes from plastics and plastic products, which could lead to human health hazards, environmental pollution including natural environment beauty deterioration, entanglement and death of aquatic organisms, sewage system blockage etc, and to adopt measures to avoid its usage.
Further, as given in the academic calendar 2022, all head of institutions are asked to take measures to practice plastic-free campus and advocate elimination of single use plastic items.
