  • DIMAPUR — International Nurses’ Day was commemorated across various districts of Nagaland on Monday, with programmes held in Dimapur, Longleng, and Mokokchung. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Our nurses, our future: caring for nurses strengthens economies”.

  • International Nurses Day, observed annually on May 12, marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale and celebrates the global impact of nurses on health and well-being.

  • According to an update, the Trained Nurses' Association of India (TNAI) Dimapur Unit celebrated the day at Chapel Hall, Medical Fellowship, District Hospital Dimapur.

  • Dr. Keveduyi Theyo, Medical Superintendent, on the occasion emphasised that nurses are the backbone of healthcare and said that nursing is not merely a profession; it is a calling, a dedication to serve, comfort, and heal.

  • The theme speaker, Limasungla Aier, general secretary of the TNAI Dimapur Unit, highlighted the challenges faced by nurses and the nurses' agenda for sustainable workforce well-being, which includes ensuring adequate staffing and skill mix for effective care, investing in the right resources and equipment, providing safe and decent working conditions, supporting education and professional development, ensuring an optimal scope of practice, building supportive, high-performing organisational cultures, improving access to healthcare and well-being supports, and valuing nurses with fair, competitive compensation.

  • Further, the Student Nurses Association (SNA) School of Nursing, District Hospital Dimapur (SON DHD), portrayed this year's theme with a role play.

  • The District Hospital Longleng celebrated the day at the hospital premises, during which Khono Yhome, Assistant Nursing Superintendent, highlighted the selfless dedication and enduring spirit of nurses, especially in the face of modern-day healthcare challenges.

  • “Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system,” said Yhome. “They work day and night, often under immense pressure, yet with unmatched dedication and compassion. Sadly, their voices often go unheard, their contributions unrecognised, and their needs unmet — leading many to experience burnout, stress, and fatigue.”

  • She emphasised that the theme of the year is a call for real action — to provide nurses with safe working conditions, mental health support, and proper recognition. "When nurses are supported, we build stronger, healthier, and more resilient communities," she added.

  • In Mokokchung, the day was held at the Multi-Purpose Hall, School of Nursing IMDH, with T Temsusenla Aier, principal of the School of Nursing, Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital, as the theme speaker.

  • An update mentioned that, on the occasion, she called upon all the nurses to reaffirm their dedication to the call of the noble profession, maintaining that nurses are the backbone of all healthcare institutions. She also highlighted the importance of nurses' mental and physical health and a safe working environment.
