Nagaland launches Phase VI of the Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccination Mission to immunise 60,000 livestock under LHDCP.

DIMAPUR — The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) launched Phase VI of the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Vaccination Mission under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) at the State Cattle Breeding Farm, Lerie, Kohima, on Wednesday.
In his launching address, the Director of AH&VS, Dr. BM Sunep, apprised the officers and staff on the importance of timely vaccination and the participation of all stakeholders for the success of the mission, which will run for two months from October 15 to December 15, stated a DIPR report.
He highlighted the direct impact of such economically important diseases on farmers’ livelihoods and stressed the need for effective control and eradication of FMD by 2030, in line with the guidelines of the LHDCP, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, government of India.

The mission aims to immunise about 60,000 cattle and other susceptible animals in the state against FMD, a highly contagious disease that poses a major threat to livestock.
As part of the ongoing campaign, the department urged all livestock owners to avail themselves of the free vaccination at designated vaccination centres or contact the nearest veterinary institutes.
Dr. Sunep also administered the first vaccine to mark the launch of Phase VI of the FMD Vaccination Mission in the state.
