Dimapur, Oct. 15 (EMN): Nagaland is honouring the contribution and efforts of women who make up a considerable portion of the population’s agricultural production and farming, and food security sector. Government institutions and nongovernmental agencies across the state observed Women Farmers’ Day on Oct. 15.

The KVK at Dimapur observed the day to recognize the contribution of women in farming. During the event on October 15, Dr. Aleminla Ao, professor at SASRD, was the special guest, updates said.
The programme started with a welcome address by Dr Lohit Kumar Baishya, joint director In-charge. He appealed to women who farm, to ‘sustain the farming and other activities’ and ‘develop themselves up to the level of entrepreneurs to generate the income from farming and other allied activities,’ according to updates.
Dr. Aleminla Ao addressed the event too. In her brief remarks, she told the participants that 80% field operations are done by women farmers. Women are working for house hold jobs as well agricultural operations. She said that, ‘We play an important role in society. Let us feed our children healthy food.’
A number of women also spoke about their success in farming. 60 women in farming took part in the event, it was informed.
Mokokchung (Our Correspondent)
Women Farmers’ Day was observed in Mokokchung district too. An event marking the day was conducted at the MMC shopping complex in Mokokchung town on Oct. 15. The programme included a ‘Mahila Kisan Mela’ where farm produce from sixteen women groups and individual farmers from different villages were brought in for sale. A seminar about “strengthening women farmers in Mokokchung” was also conducted.
The event also gave awards to women in farming. Special invitee Sachin Jaiswal, Mokokchung’s deputy commissioner, gave away the awards. In his speech, Jaiswal congratulated the women for their contribution to agriculture, and encouraged them to make the district a “food basket” for all.
Stories of success and achievements were also narrated by farmers during the seminar.
Mon
A similar program was conducted by the Atma in Mon town on Oct. 15. Project director of the Mon Atma Eyongol Natso was quoted in a DIPR update as having stated that “women are the driving force of self-help groups.” Technical sessions on various topics were also conducted during the event.
The Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Phek organized a ‘Mahila Kisan Divas’ involving members of different self-help group, and students on the 15th. ‘55 beneficiaries’ participated in the event, updates on Monday stated.
Veshetsolu, headmistress of the government high school of Porba, was said to have ‘strongly emphasized on linkage of farmers, research institute, nongovernmental organisations and policy makers for holistic development in the field of agriculture and allied sector.’ She emphasized the importance of double cropping as it would lead to doubling income.
Students and farmers participated in a drawing competition and extempore speech competition during the event. The winners were given prizes during an award ceremony, it was informed.
One day programme on Mahila Kisan Diwas was organized at Kigwema village on 15th October 2018 by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kohima. Observing the divas Mr. Longma yanger (ACTO) kvk kohima highlighted the significant role played by Women in Agriculture and their contribution towards household food security and self sufficiency, he also further encouraged the women folks to progress a little further by adopting new technologies for better production and economic growth.
Mrs. Keviyanuo Zhasa (TO) also emphasize about mushroom cultivation, pulses production which could earn extra revenue during winter season after harvest of paddy. The programme was attended by 42 farm women of kigwema village, the programme also included distribution of serrated sickle for paddy harvesting.
