KOHIMA — Police Commemoration Day was observed at the State Police Headquarters in Kohima on Tuesday, with Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma leading in paying tributes to police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.

In his address, Sharma said the occasion was not only a day of mourning but also one of celebrating the spirit of selfless sacrifice of police men and women who had “become immortal through their deeds.” He said it was a time to reflect on their martyrdom, which stands as an example for others to emulate.

The DGP called for a renewed pledge to serve the people, uphold national integrity, and make the supreme sacrifice when required.

Informing that 186 police personnel across India had lost their lives while performing their duties this year, Sharma said the gathering was held to honour their service and dedication.

He also paid tribute to Constable Chandan Das of the 9th NAP (IR), Nagaland Police, who died in the line of duty. “His martyrdom is acknowledged with reverence as we salute the services rendered by him and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family,” he said.

Sharma further commended the dedication and commitment of Nagaland Police personnel, stating that their efforts in maintaining law and order and ensuring public peace had strengthened the state’s policing system and earned the trust of citizens.

Police Commemoration Day is observed on October 21 each year to honour the sacrifices of Indian police personnel killed in the line of duty. The observance dates back to 1959, when a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrolling team led by DCIO Karam Singh was ambushed by Chinese troops in Aksai Chin, Ladakh. Ten personnel were killed, and their bodies were later returned and cremated at Hot Springs on November 14, 1959.

Floral tributes were offered to the martyrs on the occasion.
