Nagaland Home department appoints census officers for Census of India 2027 under Census Act 1948 with strict penalties for non-compliance.

DIMAPUR — The Home Department, Government of Nagaland, has appointed census officers to take, aid in, or supervise the taking of the Census of India 2027 within their respective jurisdictions.
According to a notification, this is in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 4 of the Census Act, 1948 (Act No. 37 of 1948).
All deputy commissioners have been designated as principal census officers for their respective districts. All additional deputy commissioners (HQs) have been designated as district census officers for their respective districts.

All additional deputy commissioners (independent charge) have been designated as sub-divisional census officers for their respective sub-divisions. All SDOs (C) and EACs have been designated as charge officers for their respective circles or charges.
Additionally, the CEO/ADC have been designated as city census officers, and the ADC/SDO (C)/EAC as town census officers for their respective jurisdictions.
The notification stated that necessary orders will be issued by the principal census officers.
In exercise of the power conferred by sub-section 4 of the said Act, the officers noted above have the power of appointing census officers within their respective jurisdictions.
As per the provision of section 11 of the Census Act 1948, any census officer or any person lawfully required to give assistance towards the taking of the Census who refuses to perform the duty allotted to them under this Act or any rule made thereunder, or any person who hinders or obstructs another person in performing any such duty, shall be punishable with a fine up to INR 1,000.
In case of a conviction, they shall also be punishable with imprisonment, which may extend to three years.
