- DIMAPUR — The
national handloom expo, which is being organised by the Nagaland Handloom and
Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd. (NHHDC), Government of Nagaland
undertaking, was inaugurated by Dr. M Beena, development commissioner of
Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, at Handloom Haat,
Janpath, New Delhi, on Friday.
- Speaking at the inaugural programme, Dr. Beena expressed
happiness in the visibility that NE handloom is gaining, which according to
her, was rightly deserved. She stated that 60% of the weavers, who come to the
Handloom Haat, are from the northeast and added that such handloom expo are
organised to give the weavers an understanding of what the market and consumers
are looking for and also help them cater to the choice of customers.
- Stating that the materials produced in NE have a lot of
export potentials, Dr. Beena encouraged corporations such as NHHDCL to engage
more with the Handloom Export Promotion Council so as to increase exports
internationally, an update from PRO Nagaland House, New Delhi, stated.
- Describing the event as a right opportunity for the NE
weavers to come and showcase their handloom before the world, she expressed
confidence in the potential of handloom in the international market.
- “We are in an era of ‘slow fashion,’ as consumers become
more conscious of ethical and responsible fashion and with the handloom
industry producing less carbon footprint, it can be a premium section in the
international market,” she said.
- Prasielie Pienyu, chairman of NHHDC, thanked the office of
the Development Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, for
sponsoring the national handloom expo and expressed hope that more such
national expos would be held in the future as well.
- Wennyei Konyak, resident commissioner of Nagaland House, New
Delhi; Y Lipongse Thongtsar, managing director of NHHDC; officials from
Ministry of Textiles, GoI, NHHDCL Dimapur and Nagaland House, New Delhi were
among those present during the inaugural function.
