- DIMAPUR — Acknowledging
the tireless efforts of the Red Cross volunteers in reaching out to the
vulnerable community, especially during the time of natural disaster and emergencies,
Nagaland Governor, La. Ganesan, has encouraged the youth to join the movement
stating that the challenges demanded not just institutional action but idealism
of young hearts.
- Speaking at the World Red Cross Day programme at the Red
Cross Complex in Kohima on Thursday the theme 'On the side of humanity,' he
emphasised that Red Cross embodies the spirit of hope, empathy, kindness and
values that define humanity in the face of adversity.
- The governor, who is also the president of Indian Red Cross Society
Nagaland (IRCSN), has called for collective compassion and increased youth
involvement in humanitarian service.

- “Your work is not merely a duty, it is a testament to the
power of collective compassion,” the governor said adding that Red Cross members
in Nagaland have remained a beacon of hope, even in the most isolated and
challenging terrains.
- The governor stated that the challenges of our times
including climate change, health crises and social inequity demands not just
institutional action but the energy and idealism of young hearts, as they are
the leaders of tomorrow and change makers of today.
- "We must also recognise that building a compassionate
society begins in our homes and schools. Let us teach our children, from their
earliest years, to never turn away from suffering. Let them learn that true
strength lies in reaching out with open hands and open hearts," he said.
- Referring to this year’s theme of the Red Cross Day
celebration, the governor encouraged everyone to reflect on the true meaning of
being human. He said hope gives direction in darkness, empathy connects people
to each other’s suffering and kindness remains a universal language understood
by all.
- He also stated that the World Red Cross Day is a day that
celebrates the enduring spirit of humanity, service and solidarity and
expressed gratitude to the Red Cross family of Nagaland for their dedication,
selfless sacrifice and relentless service in times of crisis.
- "Whether braving the aftermath of natural calamities,
reaching remote villages cut off by landslides or providing solace to
vulnerable communities, you have been a beacon of hope for countless lives.
Your work is not merely a duty but it is a testament to the power of collective
compassion," he added.
- "In Nagaland, where rugged terrain and isolation
challenge accessibility, your efforts to extend aid to the farthest corners
remind us that no one is too distant to be cared for," the governor said.
- In an appeal to the youth of Nagaland, Ganesan urged them to
join the noble mission of service saying, “You are not just the leaders of
tomorrow, you are the change makers of today, The challenges of our time,
climate change, health crises and social inequity require your energy and
idealism.”
- He also stressed the importance of nurturing empathy from a
young age by instilling values of compassion and service at home and in
schools.

- The governor concluded his address by quoting Henry Dunant,
founder of the Red Cross, “We are neither angels nor saints, but human beings
who try to do what we can, for as long as we can.”
- Akhale V Khamo, general secretary of IRCSN, delivered the
message of secretary general IRCS, RK Jain, to the gathering.
- Dr. R Rose Chakhesang, MC member of IRCSN, also highlighted
briefly on the theme and urged the members to be more on the humanity even in a
situation where it does not deserve.
- After the programme, the governor visited the office of the
Voluntary Blood Donors Association Nagaland.
- In a related programme, the Mokokchung branch of Indian Red
Cross Society (IRCS) observed ‘World Red Cross Day’ at the conference hall of
the chief medical officer (CMO) on Thursday.
- In his welcome address, Dr. SS Akaba Longchar, honorary
secretary of IRCS Mokokchung, lauded the faculty and junior Red Cross
volunteers from schools and the members of the IRCS for their consistent
participation in serving humanity.
- Speaking on the occasion, the additional deputy commissioner
(ADC) of Mokokchung, Chumlamo Humtsoe, stated that ‘the spirit of free service’
exhibited by the volunteers was noteworthy of praise and recognition. He lauded
the members of the Red Cross Society for ‘volunteering without asking anything
in return.’
- He further advised the members to always uphold the seven
fundamental principles of the Red Cross namely humanity, impartiality,
neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
- Besides the IRCS members, a total of 77 volunteers from 6
schools in Mokokchung district participated in the programme.
- The Chümoukedima district branch of Indian Red Cross Society,
in collaboration with the office of chief medical officer (CMO), Chümoukedima,
also commemorated World Red Cross Day by organising a free medical camp in
Tsüüma village.

- The honorary secretary, Mhiesitsolie Khate, led the
programme, while the pastor of Tsüüma Baptist Church said the invocation prayer
and the district branch chairman, Vichütuolie Mere, highlighted about the
activities of Red Cross and inaugurated the camp.
- Meanwhile, IRCS Chümoukedima has thanked Dr. Yartenla Jamir,
CMO of Chümoukedima; Dr. Temjen Sunep, SMO in-charge of CHC Medziphema; Dr.
Michelle, Dr. Thepfusato Krose, Dr. Watikokla and Dr. Shikatoli for their
service. It also thanked the Tsüüma village council for granting the council
hall for the camp.
