Nagaland revises CMLIS, providing INR 2 lakh free life insurance and expanded accidental cover for eligible households across the state
DIMAPUR — Nagaland government has revised the Chief Minister's Life Insurance Scheme (CMLIS) for 2026-27, expanding insurance coverage for eligible households by providing free life insurance for breadwinners and accidental insurance for them and up to three family members.
According to a Finance department notification issued on June 30, every eligible household breadwinner will receive life insurance coverage of INR 2 lakh in the event of death from any cause, with the entire premium borne by the state government.
In addition, the scheme provides accidental insurance of INR 2 lakh each for the breadwinner and up to three eligible family members, covering accidental death and total permanent disability. Compensation of up to INR 2 lakh will also be available for accidental dismemberment and paralysis, while partial disability will be covered up to INR 1 lakh.
The revised scheme broadly follows the eligibility norms of the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY). The eligible age is 18-50 years for life insurance and 18-70 years for accidental insurance. However, the upper age limit for life insurance has been relaxed for serving government employees who are not covered under the State Government Salary Package.

The scheme will cover the principal breadwinner of households belonging to indigenous inhabitants or permanent residents of Nagaland holding a valid Indigenous Inhabitant Certificate or Permanent Residential Certificate. Dependants may also be enrolled in accordance with operational guidelines.
Accredited journalists working in Nagaland will also be eligible, subject to verification through the scheme's online portal. Government employees posted outside the state in official establishments, along with eligible work-charged, casual and contractual employees not covered under the State Government Salary Package, will also be included.
Regular government employees already covered under the Salary Package are excluded from the scheme. Individuals submitting false declarations, forged documents or bypassing the prescribed verification process will also be disqualified.
The government has made registration and validation entirely digital through the official CMLIS portal using Aadhaar authentication and mobile OTP verification.
Applications will require online approval from designated authorities, with the Finance department serving as the final approving authority. The portal will also maintain complete digital audit trails.
A household has been defined as a family unit living together and sharing a common kitchen, subject to the prescribed eligibility criteria.
For accidental insurance claims, the notification states that a post-mortem report will generally be mandatory. However, where a post-mortem is not feasible for genuine reasons, an inquiry report issued by a competent executive magistrate or administrative officer may be accepted. District administrations have been tasked with facilitating verification and processing such claims.
