Kohima, May 13 (EMN): As part of 75th years of India’s Independence celebration under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Income Tax department, Northeast region, organised an outreach programme with tax payers and others on Friday on the theme ‘Northeast region converses.’
The event was well attended by the government officials, entrepreneurs and other representatives of various institutions held at the Capital Convention Centre in Kohima.
Speaking on the occasion, Imlimeren Jamir, additional commissioner of Income Tax (ReFAC) (AU), gave a presentation on ‘Introduction to income tax and faceless schemes’ and also highlighted the tax structure, categories of tax and landmarks of the Income Tax department in India.
He also apprised the participants on the prime features of Income Tax Act 1961, criteria of tax, charging of income tax, and also pointed out the necessity for maintenance of books of account, audit requirements and also on penalty when accounting records as required are not maintained as per section 44AA.
He further enlightened on the filing of Income Tax Return that could be done offline and offline- the procedures and other facilities available for the citizens to access and its procedures.
Meanwhile, Momin Das Choudhury, Income Tax officer (Exemptions), Guwahati, enlightened the participants on exemption of trust that are functional for charitable purposes. She also highlighted the essential condition for claiming exemption and dwells on the eligibility criteria for tax exemptions.
Vizoto Alfred Rolnu, income tax inspector from the office of the Income Tax Office (TDS), Dimapur, made a presentation on TDS/ TCS — tax deducted at source tax collected at source. He also insisted on the need to have a TAN - tax deduction account number and the penalty involved.
Following the presentations, a panel discussion was also held for the participants to clarify their doubts about tax.
Earlier, GG Kamei, commissioner of Income Tax (Admin, and Taxpayer Services) from office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, NER) gave an introductory address for the events.
On the occasion, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav unsung heroes were also recognised and felicitated. The recipients included Hekani Jakhalu Kense, founder of Youthnet; Neichute Doulo, founder and CEO of Entrepreneurs Associate (EA); Shiroi Lily Shaiza, co-founder of NagaEd; Kevisato Sanyu, co-founder of NagaEd; Yanpvuo Yanfo Kikon, entrepreneur and consultant and blogger of Naga Blog; Alenuo Angami, superintendent of Bright Morning Star Children Home; Prof Rosemary Dzuvichu, scholar and activists; Richard Belho, architect of Bamboo Architect; Dr. Kelühol Tase, environmental preservationist working for Rhododendron regeneration in Jakahama area; and Sentipokla Jamir, founder of Footprints working to help underprivileged widows and widower.
