Dimapur, Nov. 24 (EMN): Nagaland was estimated to generate about 330.49 metric tons per day (TPD) of solid waste daily, out of which only 285.49 TPD is collected while only 122 TPD is treated and 7.5 TPD is land-filled.
According to Central Pollution Control Board Delhi, annual report on solid waste management (2020-2021) it is reported that there are total 39 ULBs responsible for implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, in the state.
Nagaland bailing machines have been provided in 11 district headquarters while Dimapur Municipal Corporation has begun developing existing dumpsite to develop solid waste processing and according to the report only 9 states/ UTs which includes Andhra Pradesh, J&K, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Telangana, Tripura, UP and West Bengal) have reclaimed less than 10% of dumpsites in their jurisdiction.
Nagaland has a total 37 existing dumpsites, while only one landfill site is identified in Kohima which is operational and in the country there are only 341 landfills in operations whereas there are 3184 solid waste dumpsites.
While Nagaland stands at 28 ranks in the environmental performance (SWM) based scoring 42 marks, Madhya Pradesh has obtained the highest score (76.75) followed by Goa (71.50), Chandigarh (71.25), Chhattisgarh (69.00), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (67.75) and Maharashtra (67.50) and the lowest score in the performance in Solid Waste management were Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, West Bengal and Lakshadweep of which Arunachal Pradesh (25.00) has obtained the lowest score.
According to the report the total quantity of solid waste generated in the country is 160038.9 TPD of which 152749.5 TPD of waste is collected with overall collection efficiency of 95.4%, while 79956.3 TPD (50%) of waste is treated and 29427.2 (18.4%) is land-filled, while 50655.4 TPD which is 31.7% of the total waste generated remains unaccounted.
