Nagaland’s premier Inter-District Football Championship, the Dr. T Ao Trophy, has transformed into a spectacular sporting extravaganza over the years, bringing people from various districts together in the spirit of sportsmanship and brotherhood. The tournament has evolved in every aspect, from the standard of play to fan support to the level of competition. The growing interest in the tournament, which is named after Nagaland's proud son Dr. Talimeren Ao, the first captain of the Indian national football team that played at the 1948 London Olympics, is evident from the growing spectator numbers. While the 24th edition of the tournament held in Kohima marked a defining moment in Nagaland football, the 25th edition held in Dr. T Ao’s home district Mokokchung consolidated the momentum. Despite being held far from the state capital, the tournament drew immense support from football fans and enthusiasts, proving that distance was no obstacle. It was evident from the jam-packed Renpo Lu Sports Complex at Ungma during the final match between defending champions Mon and 2024 edition champions Tuensang on Thursday. Adding to this, over 100,000 people watched the final match online. Mon successfully defended their title in a tie-breaker after a 1-1 draw following extra time. It was a thrilling contest befitting a final. Beyond the exhilarating play, the exceptional sportsmanship displayed on the field was a testament to professionalism, something everyone can take home. The increasing popularity of the tournament over the years also suggests a bright future for football in the state.
Not only is the Dr. T Ao Trophy garnering more traction, but the very trajectory of the sport is also taking a positive turn amid government efforts to promote sports, which is evident in the increasing number of astroturf pitches and futsal facilities in the state. Further boosting this positive trend are the Nagaland Super League (NSL), launched last year, and the recent entry of Nagaland United Sports Club (NUSC) into the Indian Football League (IFL) for the 2026-27 season. NUSC secured their spot in the country's second-division men's professional football league by acquiring the sporting rights of Aizawl Football Club (AFC). Now, all eyes will be on NUSC as they take on Real Kashmir FC in the opening match of the IFL 2026-27 on Friday. Regardless of the outcome of the match, it marks a historic moment for Nagaland. In a game, some lift the trophy, while others gain invaluable experience and lasting friendships. While Mon may have claimed the Dr. T Ao Trophy back-to-back, it is Nagaland football that truly emerged victorious. This momentum should be maintained.
