Nagaland’s still in education trouble: The state is still facing a shortage of mathematics and science teachers. As if the fear of ‘mathematics and science’ was not enough already, according to a local bureaucrat.
A capacity-building workshop for science and mathematics teachers / DIET lecturers on Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiya (RAA) was conducted on March 30 in Dimapur.
The main objective of the workshop was aimed at nurturing the “spirit of enquiry and creativity, love for science and mathematics and effective use of technology amongst the children and encourage those who show an inclination and talent for these subject to be encouraged and supported to heights of academic excellence and research,” the organizers stated in a press release on Friday.
The RAA will target students in the age group of 6-18 years.
FP Solo, Commissioner and Secretary to the govt of Nagaland, attended the inaugural function as the chief guest of the event. In his speech, the official highlighted the importance of science, mathematics and technology in one’s daily life and ‘for which we need to popularise and promote teaching and learning of mathematics and science and change the mindset of the students.’
Solo also urged the teachers to ‘dispel the fear of learning science and mathematics from the minds of the students and make it more interesting and pleasing.’
The bureaucrat also said that the RAA came at the right time to promote and popularize science and mathematics in Nagaland. He expressed regret, however, that the state was ‘facing acute shortage of mathematics and science teachers particularly at primary level due to absence of qualified man power.’
The workshop ended with the organizers called “brainstorming participation” from the participants.
