Nagaland enrols 32,915 students in 72 colleges for 2024-25

  • KOHIMA — In Nagaland, a total of 32,915 students were enrolled in 72 colleges during 2024-25, out of which 14,500 were male and 18,415 female.

  • This was provided in the annual administrative report 2024-25 of the Higher Education department, which was released during the 6th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly this month.

  • The report updated that Nagaland has a total of 94 higher education institutions: five universities (four private), one National Institute of Technology, 71 affiliated colleges under Nagaland University (54 private and 17 government), one autonomous scientific institution under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, three autonomous colleges (two private and one government), 13 professional colleges (two government B. Ed and seven private B. Ed colleges), three law colleges (private), and one school of nursing.

  • The report informed that a total of 10,436 students were enrolled in government colleges during 2024-25, while 22,479 students enrolled in private colleges during the same period.

  • Among government colleges, Kohima College and Kohima Science College had the highest number of enrolments, with a total of 1,897 students and 1,744 students, respectively. Meanwhile, the New Model College Wakching in Mon and the New Model College Mangkolemba in Mokokchung, which became operational in 2023, have 7 students and 19 students enrolled, respectively.

  • Among the private colleges, St. Joseph College Kohima has the highest enrolment with 3,996 students, followed by Tetso College, Chümoukedima, with 1,823 students. Meanwhile, Loyem Memorial College, Tuensang, had only one enrolment in 2024-25.

  • Data also shows that out of the 55 private colleges across the state, 29 colleges are in the general Dimapur area (including Niuland and Chümoukedima), 17 in Kohima district, four in Mokokchung district, two in Tuensang, and Wokha, Peren, and Mon districts have one private college each.
  • The state also has a total of 33 theological colleges as of 2024-25.

  • In terms of scholarships, there are 42,824 beneficiaries of the CSS-Post Matric Scholarship (ST), and the amount stands at INR 5662.26 lakh; there are 4,339 beneficiaries of the Nagaland State Merit Scholarship at an amount of INR 633.85 lakh; and there are 94 beneficiaries of the Nagaland State Research Scholarship amounting to INR 76.53 lakh.
