Chakhroma Students’ Union flags unsafe roads and bridges across Dimapur and Chümoukedima, urging urgent repairs to protect commuters.
DIMAPUR — The Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU) has flagged the poor condition of roads and bridges at several locations in Dimapur and Chümoukedima, saying they have become a concern for commuters, especially students.
In a statement on Friday, the union pointed to the Chathe Bridge, the stretch between 5th Mile and Green Park Junction, and the road near Supermarket Bridge as needing immediate attention.
The CSU stated that these routes are used extensively by the public and by students travelling to and from educational institutions every day. It added that the deteriorating roads and bridges were making travel difficult and exposing commuters to avoidable risks.
The union called on the departments concerned to inspect the locations and take up repair and maintenance work without delay. It also sought immediate safety measures at spots where the condition of the road or bridge poses a direct threat to commuters.
The CSU said officials responsible for maintaining the infrastructure should be held accountable if an accident, injury or loss of life occurs because known hazards are left unattended.
“Public safety cannot be compromised, nor can responsibility be deferred after an avoidable tragedy occurs,” the union stated.
The students’ body appealed to the authorities to address the problems before they worsen, stressing that the safety of commuters should not be treated as a matter to be taken up only after an accident.
