Nagaland cop sentenced to 6 years imprisonment for sexually assaulting minor

Dimapur, July 14 (EMN): A Nagaland Police personnel posted at Phek has been sentenced to six years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl.

In a judgement delivered on Tuesday, the District and Sessions Judge, Phek, pronounced the ‘town head constable’ of Phek DEF, Zaphet Kuki, guilty of “aggravated sexual assault” on a minor girl. The incident happened on January 18 this year.

The case was fast tracked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and completed within seven months of taking cognisance of the offence.

Besides the imprisonment, the accused has been imposed a fine of INR 6000, out of which INR 5000 will be paid to the victim as compensation.

While delivering the verdict, the court observed that the accused person, as police personnel, was trained to lead a disciplined life and was under statutory obligation to protect the people from all sorts of crime. ‘Instead he strayed away from the path of virtue and committed sexual assault on a helpless girl child,’ it remarked.
