CHUCHUYIMLANG — Chuchuyimlang, a well-known Ao Naga village in Mokokchung district recognised by the Government of Nagaland as the state's Maotsu destination village, is set to celebrate the Moatsu Festival in a grand manner this year highlighting the village's distinctive "Ancha" tradition at the Anu Mai Amphitheatre on May 1.
The Chuchuyimlang Village Council and tourism committee made the announcement during a press conference held at the village chairman’s residence on April 25.
The event was attended by Rongsen GB, Ao Sanen Pongen (chairman of the Chuchuyimlang Village Council), Putusanen, a member of the village council, and Nungsangtemsu, secretary of the tourism committee.
Speaking at the press conference, the Chuchuyimlang Village Council (CVC) chairman explained that unlike Moatsu celebrations in other Ao villages, Chuchuyimlang will observe the festival by incorporating its unique "Ancha" tradition.
He noted that the village upholds this practice every year with a strong emphasis on community bonding.
During Moatsu, the village rekindles its ancestral friendships and diplomatic relations by inviting neighbouring villages, including those from beyond the Ao tribe.
Representatives from other Naga tribes participate in the festivities, transforming the event into a broader platform for unity and cultural exchange rather than a purely local celebration. This long-standing custom is known as “Ancha.”
Pongen highlighted that the "Ancha" tradition, practiced since the time of their forefathers, promotes kinship through cultural exchange, shared feasts, and strengthened bonds between Chuchuyimlang and villages from other Naga tribes.
He added that this year’s celebration will be particularly special. In addition to inviting cultural troupes from two tribes and the Ao villages of Unger and Yaongyimsen, the village has extended invitations to all communities with whom it has maintained the "Ancha" tradition.
The invited "Ancha" villages include those from the Konyak, Phom, Chang and the Sangtam tribes.
Pongen further informed that Deputy Chief Minister Yangthungo Patton has consented to be the guest of honour, while Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Nagaland, will grace the occasion as the special guest. MLA Nuklutoshi Longkumer is also scheduled to address the gathering.
The chairman recalled that the Department of Tourism designated Chuchuyimlang as the state’s “Maotsu Destination” in 2000 in recognition of the unique and elaborate way the festival is observed here.
