DIMAPUR — Nagaland Athletics has congratulated its president, Abu Metha, on his appointment as co-chair of the Modernisation Committee of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Metha also serves as the vice president of the AFI.


The federation, in a press statement, expressed gratitude to the AFI under the leadership of President Bahadur Singh Sagoo and the guidance of Dr. Lalit K. Bhanot for the recognition and trust placed in Metha.


It said that this prestigious appointment reflects Metha’s dedication to sports administration, spanning over two decades following his active years as a national-level athlete.

“He has successfully completed certified courses in sports administration, event management, and safeguarding in sports under the aegis of World Athletics and the International Olympic Committee,” it read.


Further, the statement mentioned that Metha has played a pioneering role in formulating and implementing key sports policies and strategies in Nagaland and the northeastern region, has been instrumental in organising and hosting major regional, national, and international sports events, and continues to mentor athletes, administrators, and emerging leaders in the sports ecosystem.


It cited that his contributions at the national and international level include serving as team leader for India at the World U-20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, participating as a delegate at the Paris Olympic Games, and attending the World Mountain Running Congress in Thailand.


Nagaland Athletics conveyed best wishes to Metha for a successful tenure and continued service to the cause of Indian sport and the nation.
