Dimapur, Jan. 4 (EMN): Nagaland is among the top five states in the country with the highest number of convicts with habitual offender or recidivists admitted in 2020, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The NCRB in its report stated that a total of 3,908 convicts were habitual offenders during 2020; while the states that reported the highest number of habitual offenders were Mizoram, Delhi, Goa, Nagaland and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
It said that there were 391 inmates in Nagaland prison as on December 31, 2020, out of which 15.5% of the convicts were habitual offenders.
As per data, a total of 1,01,063 convicts were lodged in various jails of the country consisting of offences affecting the human body, public tranquillity, property, offences relating to documents and property marks, and offences against women.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of convicts followed by Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
The report revealed that a total of 11,491 convicts were lodged in various jails of the country for committing offences under Special and Local Laws such as crimes against women, crimes against SC/ST, Arms and Explosive substances Act, Liquor and Narcotics Drugs related Acts, other regulatory and enforcement acts or Gambling Act, Foreigner and Passport-related Acts, Indian Railways or Railways Act, Miscellaneous Act and other SLL crime.
It was also reported that under crimes against women, Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of convicts followed by Uttarakhand and Jharkhand. NCRB revealed that a total of 2,83,556 undertrials were lodged in various jails of the country under various IPC crimes and 88,282 were lodged under various SLL crimes at the end of December 31, 2020.
