At least 28 people reportedly fell ill after attending a birthday party in Wokha with several requiring hospitalisations.
WOKHA — At least 28 people reportedly fell ill after attending a birthday party in Wokha on August 3, with several requiring hospitalisation at Dr. Motsuo Memorial District Hospital (DMMDH) and other private healthcare facilities.
A total of 21 patients were brought to the district hospital with symptoms including diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, fever and abdominal pain. Of these, 19 were admitted, while two were treated as outpatients. The first cases arrived at around 9:50 pm, nearly seven hours after the party, according to the hospital authority.
As of August 7, two patients remain under treatment and observation, while 17 have been discharged. No deaths or referrals have been reported, stated hospital authorities, adding that the clinical symptoms were consistent with a suspected food-borne illness, with patients also presenting fever, hypotension, abdominal pain and headache.
The patients reported consuming common food items, including meat, dal, chickpea, pickle and papad, which the hospital identified as possible sources of contamination, though the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.
Food samples have been collected by the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare (DHFW), Nagaland, for laboratory testing.
Meanwhile, five persons admitted to Panacea Nursing Home and two patients at Mhondamo Memorial Hospital have been discharged. DMMDH has informed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and DHFW about the incident, which is being treated as a suspected food-borne illness pending test results.
