DIMAPUR — In a bid to curb incidents of job-related fraud and exploitation faced by Naga youth migrating to urban centres, the Naga Students’ Union Pune (NSUP) has launched a job and welfare awareness drive.

The initiative aims to promote safer migration and ensure proper guidance for individuals from the region seeking opportunities in Pune and beyond.

In a press statement, the NSUP stated that due to limited job opportunities in their home states, many Naga people have migrated to cities across India in search of employment and a better livelihood. However, it is a painful truth that many youths have repeatedly fallen prey to fraudulent job offers, illegal businesses, and exploitative work environments.

It said that too often, young people venture into unfamiliar cities based solely on recommendations from peers or acquaintances, without verifying the legitimacy of the job, company, or recruiter. It urged not only the youth but also parents, elders, and community leaders to ensure that proper guidance and counselling are given before sending young people to unknown cities.

It recommended that any individual planning to come to Pune for employment, higher education, or any other purpose first contact the union for verification and support. It maintained that it can help to confirm the legitimacy of job offers or institutions, assist in finding reliable and safe employment or admissions, and provide protection and support through proper registration with the union.

“We have encountered numerous unfortunate incidents, particularly involving unverified BPO jobs, fraudulent wellness centres, and illegal SPA therapist placements,” it said, adding that youth were lured by promises of easy interviews and high starting salaries, only to end up in police raids or situations of exploitation, humiliating the entire community.

Stating that the drive aims to protect Naga individuals who wish to migrate to Pune, it added that regardless of tribe or background, every Naga is welcome to reach out.

Also, it said that through proper registration with NSUP, individuals will be placed under its protection and guidance, reducing risks of workplace abuse, academic fraud, and community-based harassment.

It called upon all other Naga and Northeast students’ unions across India to carry forward this mission in their respective cities.
